Mill house animal sanctuary dog destroyed

Recommended Posts

Today I went to walk a lovely dog called Samson as I have done many times only to be told that the dog had been destroyed , by order of the police because they thought he was a pit bull . No questioned asked just destroyed , this dog was very loving and affectionate and was certainly not a pit bull , just a big powerful boy wanting a loving home . This is a disgrace and a terrible waste of a life just over two years of age . How can this have happened ?

Look on their website under dogs to be re -homed does he look a pit bull , try Great Dane cross mastiff !! http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/images/smilies/mad.gif

I don't understand a dog can't be destroyed purely on the basis that it resembles a pit bull, but even if it was i wasn't aware pit bulls are illegal in this country. There's got to be more to this then what you have been told.

Oh just come accross this I wonder if any of these are the reason

......... only to be told that the dog had been destroyed , by order of the police ........

You may wish to question exactly who ordered the destruction?

Who carried out the destruction?

Was the dog actually removed by the police?

There are a lot more steps that need to be followed if what you say is correct.

Not me. I can remember it became illegal to have one that wasn't neutered or to breed them & to go without a muzzle or lead .

I think it's quite confusing as I find one site that says they are illegal to own then another will say if you own one it must be neutered, insured, muzzled & never out without a lead.

Even the dangerous dog act just causes more confusion

A dog does not have to be a pit bull. It just has to resemble one. If so many of it's features match the regulations it is classed as a 'pit bull type' and can be seized and pts.

Pitt bulls should not exist anymore in the UK. To keep one they have to be registered, neutered, large tattoo on stomach, muzzled and on lead in any public space (including transporting). They are illegal to rehome / sell. Basically they should not exist. If the dog is deemed as type the rescue would have no choice but to allow it to be seized, they cannot rehome the dog as that is illegal even if they are allowed to be registered.

There is cases when the dog can be assessed and the above carried out so it can be kept. However this often has to go to court. This is when the DDA falls. Dogs can be bred to look like any type of dog and if people are stupid enough to do this they are putting the dog at risk.

The police arrived on news year with a warrant and the rescue center where given three choices either the police put the dog down immediately, you have your own vet come , you argue that he is not a pit bull and call someone in but if he turns out to be a pit bull then you will be fined for having a dangerous . A charity that is struggling to care and pay for Sheffields unwanted pets can not run to this sort of expense and they have been under enough stress recently because of a complaint of a single neighbor. I only wish they had taken the third option because Samson was not a pit bull nor had he attacked anyone , he was castrated and muzzled when exercised as a precaution knowing that most dogs particularly males are intimated on the lead which can lead to aggression. Surely the people of Sheffield would have helped financially with his battle , now its to late but someone has a lot of answering to do , this is disgraceful . I can only imagine how frightened he must have been when the vet came poor boy RIP

He was a lovely boy and so affectionate , you just had to watch you did n `t get concussion or a broken nose when he jumped up for a cuddle ! http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/images/smilies/frown.gif

Bless him he looked lovely & i personally wouldn't say he was Pit Bull, more mastiff. I often watch the American Animal Rescue & I know when they do sieze put bulls they will often say how affectionate they are with a responsible owner. It's such a shame that humans can be a good friend to its best friend & these poor animals have suffer as a result.
