Car dilemma - What advice can people give?

Hi

My cars MOT and tax are both up for renewal.

Tax will cost £215 for a year.

For MOT it needs front brake pads and flexible section of exhaust changing (between manifold and CAT) and maybe also cat (was advised this was on its way when I had exhaust back boxes and pipes replaced last year) that I know about.

Also on top of this the clutch is now starting to slip.

 

The car is almost 12 years old. It's it worth spending all this money on a car thats at an age where in my previous experience of cars everything starts to fail. Would it be more sensible to scrap it and buy a cheap run around with full Mot/tax. Also what scrap value would I expect for a 2.0 litre Honda Accord.

Who's to say your 'cheap around' that you buy to replace isn't going to need even more spending on it.

 

Stick 6 months tax on it, and get it through the MOT.

Agree with this. The parts you need replacing aren't too dear. Take advantage of the 15% and 25% off deals that Euro Car Parts are doing, and perhaps check on Ebay for a cat - I got a new one for an old Pug 306 for less than £50.

 

If you're still in doubt just work out the cost of the parts + scrap value (lets say £250) against how much a similar car with 12 months MOT is selling for on Autotrader, cheapest one in Sheffield is £650, and that has an ABS fault:

Keep it if it's running well, been serviced properly, and has no engine or rust issues. Hondas are a reliable marque and brake pads, exhausts and clutches are consumables. Don't even think of using a main dealer for the work as the prices of parts and labour will be absurd, use a reliable independent mechanic. Changing pads, exhaust section is simple stuff, get a quotation for doing the clutch.

If you know the car is OK and runs good and as long as there is no rust underneath or around the chassis keep it fix it, the things that need doing to it are just things that go on any car, Honda are good cars they are easy to fix and are reasonably priced for parts,if you spent a load of money on it you will get it back in the long run,you could buy another car and it could be a big mistake,take it to a garage and get some prices on the work that needs doing then have a think about it,scrap price you should get about 180 quid for it.
