athena
I need someone to do the conveyancing on a house sale. Anybody got any recommendations. I'd go for either a local solicitor or might try an online company. On-line ones look cheaper but I'd love to hear if anyone has any experience of these. And are they really cheaper than the local guys.
Jeffrey Shaw
Generally, a local solicitor is a better bet. People local to you can say whether he/she is any good. You can arrange to visit the office (by appointment!) You can see the person whom you are entrusting with your business. An online-only firm might perhaps be cheaper but that's not the only criterion. However, sometimes an online firm's specialist knowledge of a 'problem' scenario might outweigh the convenience of a local firm.
aliceBB
Alternatively you can go with one recommended by someone you trust but elsewhere in the country. They don't have to be local, with the internet, etc., they can do everything they need to do from their office anyway and you can always ring or email them and discuss progress. Appointments make the whole thing more expensive and it is bad enough as it is. My parents used a solicitor in Sunderland for the conveyancing for a house in Derby - it cost £500 and he was efficient and didn't keep disappearing off the radar like some of them do. mogwai84
a local solicitor was useful, we had good face to face meetings where he explained everything, and he knew the area and local issues. (Ross Ward @ Taylor and Emmet)
rising damp
I have used both. I used an online solicitor to transfer the title of a property to my wife last year. 1. In error they sent me a copy of someone else's details to sign, so presumably they also sent my details to them. 2. They did not update the correct address for service, so we had to contact the land registry to update it ourselves at a later date. 3. They initially showed the fees to be quite competitive, but actually when all the fees they charged were added up, it was not particularly cheap at all, about the same as a local solicitor. 4. Their standard of spelling was atrocious, they got our names wrong several times in correspondence. I wouldn't use an online one again.

It's what we call the Ryanair/EasyJet style of pricing.
