O.K.,Crookesy, I ll kick off with two or three easy ones---Union Picture House, El Mambo, one side of the Empire [ with entrance to the ' Gods ' ]. This was about the mid-fifties.

 

[ Roughly between the side of the Nelson and the Mambo, there was an entrance to the Temperance Society. They used to run a Youth Club every Friday. About 3 of us used to go and attended regularly for about a year or more. It was great-----comfortable [ not like the cold, bleak affairs held in schools ] and seemed to have some beautiful, nice girls. We used to chat to them, when possible on the fire escape and we used to hear a duet singing from the Nelson. Later in life, I found out that this was probably the well-known, Sam & Lil ]

I wonder if they were the entrance to Wilks loading bay, remember I'm just a youngster.

 

 

hiya again thinking about it it might have been although i have a feeling there may have been some silversmiths in a back yard as i think there was a shop the top side of the gates with their wares for sale.keep it going eh

Further on from the Union Picture House on the opposite side of the street was the Empire Theatre.

Not sure if this is still Union St or not

hiya hazel, you are right and i am wrong, i've just dug mums bankbook out and the main office was 103 norfolk st, mums was at 4 landsdown rd,

looking at it again it says,deposits received from 1 shilling upwardswith a total of £500 in any bank year, and a total limit of £3.000.interest rate being 2.1/2%

 

I can't remember the interest given, the only reason I joined that bank was the interest I had in one of the bank clerks. Never did catch his eye though.

We must not forget the Cambridge Arcade and Nelson House across the road on the corner, it had a sort of spire and a clock (I think). There was a cafe called Stewarts, just up from the cinema. My mother's cousin was the ticket vendor at The Empire.

A great childhood in Shiregreen & Parson cross. A mucky City but I loved it. My memories go back to the early 30's up to the 50's when I left for further pastures.

I must tell you this, I picked this girl up in the 60's, she came over very sexy and asked me to kiss her somewhere dirty.

 

So I took her to Wincobank.

Back on Union Street.. Am I imagining it or do I remember that Woolworths was accross the street from the Empire ?

We must not forget the Cambridge Arcade and Nelson House across the road on the corner, it had a sort of spire and a clock (I think). There was a cafe called Stewarts, just up from the cinema. My mother's cousin was the ticket vendor at The Empire.

 

HIYA me again around the union cinema the clock i remember and the name newton chambers comes to mind, i also remember the temp store that british home stores had, and also the grapes and another one a single storie another temp pub at the corner of the moor.used to dislike the temp shops around the moor, like bhs,atkinsons across the moor from where the main shop was bombed,but worst of all was marks and spencers, they took the landsdown cinema but left the sloping floors of the cinema in. can you imagine later the locarno still having a floor like that, the reason i've said before the counters were at one end the right height but the other end they were too high for a 5 year old, the first two you went down a flight of steps ,into what seemed like a basement, seem to remember the nelson and the grapes were side by side opposite the victoria statue at moorhead where the transport offices were
