HeadingNorth
Running particularly on paved surfaces is nto a good idea for someone with 'dodgy' knees. Decent shoes may help but sport like swimming or cycling which are both just as good as running to terms of burning calories and cardio and have low to no impact on your joints might be better. Or a cross trainer, which simulates the running motion but doesn't leave you pounding the pavement. (Though personally I prefer your suggestions...) native son
I'm doing a "couch to 5km" coaching programme on my phone and am really enjoying it having never done any running before. I'm off the couch, 3 weeks in and my knees have started hurting when I run for more than a couple of minutes. I've heard some specialist running shops do a gait analysis before advising on appropriate shoes. Does anyone know of such a shop please? Give up and start cycling. RozeePozee
They are lovely in there I run for about 40 minutes now but I have to admitt I really am not a natural runner. I'm still waiting for the 'nice' feeling than people claim they get when running, That's not called running, that's called sex, or chocolate! I just find it hard work! I have decided that distance running is not for me and that I will work on just speeding up and keeping the distance around 5-8 Km. How far have you got with the couch to 5km programme? I bet you have nearly finished it if your doing 25 minutes I'm in week 6 now. Like you, I don't think I'll ever run a marathon. Initially, my long runs resembled a very fast walk, rather than something you could describe as a run! I live near Endcliffe Park and my goal is to be able to run to Forge Dam and back before breakfast. Every run, I get that little bit closer. 0742Sheff
I bought a pair of Asics Gel-Cumulus 12 not long ago. Before those i would get a really dull aching pain in my shins but that stopped the moment i bought the Asics. Getting the right shoe makes so much difference. Sounds silly but an ingrowing toe nail has kept me from running for 2 weeks now. It's finally starting to clear up now

That's the beauty of running... you can set yourself goals (like the one above). It's not about competing with others, but more with yourself. Keep it up and before you know, you will be running until you get to the Alpaca Farm up at Ringinglow.
Amaranthus
If the pain starts to come back a knee support might help.
RozeePozee
If the pain starts to come back a knee support might help. I've literally not felt a thing since I changed my shoes. If it's psychosomatic, I don't care!
