Look North/ Look Leeds

Recommended Posts

After years of watching the all things Leeds Bradford bias on look North I decided to try Calender on ITV. last night.

Not much difference I am afraid but the presenters were not as bias as the BBC lot.

Perhaps Rhoni Robinson and Toby Foster can bring this to the attention of the powers that be at head office.

Sheffields best bars and pubs are streets ahead of Leeds. Or anywhere in the country.

Sheffield has better parks and its best areas rival anywhere. What brings Sheff down is its shopping area. Which frankly is a nasty joke.

Finally Leeds is culturally a black hole. Damien Hirst & Kaiser Chiefs anyone? Thought not:)

Would you prefer David Hirst, and Little Chefs?

How do you thik residents of Ackworth,Bradford,Castleford,,,,,,,,,,Wakefield,Xxxrrogarte,Yatelley and Zinsorclough feel?Such towns are rarely mentioned but their residents accept the imbalance with dignity and are not affronted.

If you think its bad now on look north, wait until trinity shopping centre opens. There will be an entire program dedicated to it telling us how Leeds now rivals Paris and Milan for shopping.

Leeds arena will get a bit of free publicity as well when it opens. It will be sold as the worlds greatest entertainment venue and unique like no other, despite most other cities having an arena for at least 10 years

I'm living in Leeds here...

Most Leeds people including me love Sheffield. Places i have been to in Sheffield are cleaner, friendlier and i love the close distance the Peaks is.

The countryside around Leeds just doesn't compare or have the same charm. People here seem to have a real problem. Despite the news of murders, etc, I feel safer in Sheffield than Leeds.

Matter of fact I WISH we had a Supertram here. The Supertram is great. Sheffield people don't realise what a great tram system they have! Travelling around Leeds sucks. It's travel system is absolutely crap and it simply cannot take the amount of people that come here everyday.

Sheffield feels more local. You're more likely to bump into someone from Sheffield in Sheffield. Leeds is cold and full of southerners and southern graduates who work in finance or law who've moved up to Leeds because its cheaper than London.

I have to admit though that shopping is where Sheffield seriously lacks. Leeds is better for 'social shoppers'. Nightlife and shopping is the draw for most people. You see all the girls, hipsters, city workers and young people hanging around city centre. Shopping isn't about simply buying anymore. Shopping is a day out. It's like a trip to the funfair without the admission or rides. The church of shopping. Going to a far out retail park like Meadowhell just isn't the same as a city centre where there's more choice. In Leeds you have your choice of bars and food outlets. in Meadowhall you're stuck with what the Oasis has to offer. Its just a better place to hang round as a young person. it's a youthful city. There's way more specialist nights and much more of a choice in terms of nightlife attracting big underground names. From what I can remember Sheffield was all rock, indie and metal and cheesy student music and real ale.

Sheffield feels confused. It doesn't know what it wants to be. Sheffield just can't be a copycat Leeds or Manchester. It should do what it does best. Sheffield FEELS like Yorkshire :) Leeds doesn't. It feels like Manchester in Yorkshire.

The rest of West Yorkshire sucks btw. Don't know why they get so much publicity on Look North. Huddersfield only has the University going for it (a very good one), Dewsbury sucks and Bradford is a crumbling hole. Wakey is just a place where place where people who commute to Leeds to work live. It's same with Hudds as well.

A smashing post that hits the nail on the head.

Perhaps Christa and Harry will read it and then we will see more news set around the real Yorkshire .

I thought it pandered in a populist fashion by dismissing places such as Wakefield, which now has a Barbara Hepworth gallery, and no mention of the Huddersfield Wool Exchange,or that Dewsbury and Batley pioneered the recycling of wool through the dross industry.I think Leeds does compare with Manchester while Sheffield is equivalent to Bradford, fading fast.

I do not pander to populist views that is why I Love the best city in Yorkshire the city that this Forum is supposed to champion.

So may I suggest you try the Leeds section where no doubt your views will be appreciated.

Huddersfield is a commuter and Student town with tons and tons of local pride (everyone supports 'town' and the 'Giants'). it is the birthplace of Rugby League though. It's what Bolton is to Manchester (where I've lived also). It's cheaper than living in Leeds and offers better quality housing and has a good frequent train link to both Manchester and Leeds. Who can live in north Leeds and Harrogate besides middle class southerners. Harrogate rents are among the most expensive in Yorkshire! Its £700+ for even a basic 2 bed flat! It's a crime actually that local people are beginning to be priced out the place. The new Trinity shopping centre is the final nail in the coffin for Huddersfield shopping when it opens. The place is full of supermarkets, pound shops and Aldis already.

Wakefield has better shopping now, but honestly. It's too late. It can't compete with Leeds. Leeds is moving too fast. Yeah yeah The Hepworth gallery is great, though is too far out of city centre and isn't enough to get in social shoppers and young professionals, who bring in the cash. Its just 1 gallery in a city that needs a makeover. Honestly, who'd wanna stop off at Kirkgate to get to Hepworth haha? It's a dive :P

Wakefield's night scene isn't good either. It's the same as Doncaster, though not as busy! Things are changing though with the Trinity, which is suprisingly not too bad.

I wouldn't compare Sheffield to Bradford. Sheffield has things going for it, doesnt need as much work and isn't a hole full of racial tension and not just a last resort to being based in Leeds :P that said, Sheffield feels less diverse and feels more white. Probably historical as lots of Asians and blacks worked in the mills in West Yorkshire. Bradford is basically a crumbling version of Leeds. Sheffield has no competition around it because Doncaster is it's own place and Barnsley and Rotherham are way too small to compete.

I'm not being populist I'm being honest. Young people just aren't attracted to Sheffield like they are Leeds, which feels more youthful. Better dance scene and better shopping are the main draws. Championing a city is different to hating on every city except your own. Accept that the city has a problem in regards to attracting social shoppers. I cannot stress how important social shopping is for Leeds for bringing in money and younger people. If Leeds though lost that and it's prosperous banking and law businesses it has nothing. The place lacks soul. Sheffield has more qualities and things that sell the place. It has more charm and looks nicer.

Sheffield should capitalise on its 'real Yorkshire' image, and its closeness to the peaks and not try and compete for social shoppers as that's a loosing battle.

I've lived in Manchester, Bolton, Doncaster (my birthplace and i spent most my time in Sheff) and Huddersfield btw.
