  1. I never know what to make of these rankings. For example if you look at the times world university rankings for 2018 Sheffield is ahead of Nottingham, leeds and Newcastle
  2. I also can't see john lewis moving directly across the road from where they are building a giant ikea given that they have objected to ikea previously
  3. Now officially approved. Feel free to have a stiff drink (:
  4. Where did the council think these extra 40000 people were going to come from? The market did not turn Sheffield city centre into a shopping mecca overnight. Overall the city centre is still very poor. Its all part of the same bigger problem that there isn't enough in the city centre to draw people in. Whilever that is the case existing businesses including market traders will continue to struggle and people will shop elsewhere. The fact that the market isn't full also hasn't helped. It shows a clear lack of planning. It is something this council seem to be good at and is anybody really surprised that this has the councils name written all over it? The lack of progress in improving retail in the city centre has been far far too slow. Over the last 15 years very little has been achieved with projects continually stalling. You have to ask why that is? It took 20 years to just get a new market. The city centre should never have been allowed to fall into its current state in the first place.
  5. Wasn't it the labour government that allowed Abu hamza to claim the level of benefits he became accustomed too in the first place
  6. Agreed its also been like that for years. Sheffield Road in woodhouse is also a disgrace. Always makes me annoyed when they put traffic calming measures on roads like woodhouse lane when its clear nobody has actually touched the road surface for 10 years. Its like a potato field.
  7. http://www.heraldscotland.com/mobile/sport/other-sports/lure-of-china-leads-hearn-to-test-sheffields-resolve.24148210 It would appear that senior members of the council are concerned at how the tournament portrays the city. By this I presume they mean portraying the city in a positive light is to be frowned at?
  8. While you can argue that sheffield perhaps doesn't have the wealth to support a glut of high end shops it does have enough to support a better offering that it has presently (for example the next is not just poor in my opinion it is totally inadequate). There are enough people travelling into the city centre on a daily basis to sustain something much better than what we currently have. Not only that the existing businesses would also be more profitable if improvements could be made
  9. Spot on. We have some fantastic squares and public spaces. If a way can be found to connect the various spaces ( the moor, cambridge street, barkers pool, peace gardens, division street) with decent retail then it has potential. It would probably a better environment in which to shop than alot of the other places mentioned
  10. Currently waiting for the application to be determined by SCC - that's the delay
  11. Are cuts not happening elsewhere? If the leader spent as much time talking and thinking about investment and jobs as she does cuts we might get somewhere. If the public budget isn't there you need to look elsewhere If after the cuts are made the council and city continues to function what does that tell you about the previous budget. Taking one look around the city centre it is not immediately obvious what exactly the budget has been spent on year after year. The fact that the council has now mysteriously found some cash for libraries tells you everything you need to know about their agenda.
  12. I'm not sure anybody who works in a position of authority at SCC have ever stepped foot outside of Sheffield, if they had they might realise just how little they have achieved The council generally is a public relations disaster. They do next to nothing to promote a positive image of sheffield (Don valley, next, sevenstone...you can go on and on) The city centre is a sorry state, their record for attracting new business to the city is abysmal and their is a consensus that the council are hardly business friendly. They seem to react after the horse has bolted and then constantly seek to apportion the blame elsewhere. If you were a business and were looking to relocate would you be thinking this is a good place to come where you would feel supported. In the last few years what exactly has this current council achieved? Lets be right - when was the last time the leader of council said anything without mentioning government cuts. Its like a broken record. It needs somebody new to come in with a positive approach as it is clear that the appoach of succesive councils clearly has not and is not working
  13. The technical college has already been turned down by the government, so the council have obviously done their homework properly:roll:
  14. This place has now shut. Notice on the door saying suppliers and creditors will be contacted in due course. Big shame if you ask me. It always seemed relatively busy to me
  15. Another shocking crime. Poor bloke I'm not sure what is happening at the moment but sheffield seems to be in the national news every week at the moment for all the wrong reasons
