Is there too much religion involved in Christmas?

Recommended Posts

...

for me it is simply an opportunity to spend more time with friends and family, give and receive a few presents and eat and drink even more than usual ...

Have Fun !

This is why I think Atheists are hypocrites. Why celebrate Christmas when there is meaning behind it?!

Would we celebrate Diwali..I think not.

I'd celebrate anything if it gave me a few days off work, nice food, nice drink and pressies.

The holidays would be the old celebrations and festivals from pagan times.

Paganism is a religion.

I always like the coverage on Look North and out of all the religions, Hindus and Buddhists hold a special place for me, since their philosophies make the most sense!

What's the meaning?

Was it from when Christians started building crosses and churches next to pagan ritual sites and started converting the natives. Or was it from when Catholicism started worrying people into paying to save dead souls, you know, when it got so bad that Martin Luther translated the Bible (so the common man could read it) and branched off (Protestantism) because he was so insulted about the commercialisation of the religion?

But as demonstrated, Christmas isn't really a Christian festival!

I thought he had shares in the company which made Gutenburg presses? I thought the reason he translated the bible was to increase sales? (Nothing commercial about that, then.)

As for 'being insulted by the commercialisation of religion' Are you sure? Did he drink any beer/spirits brewed by the monks in the various breweries monasteries? I thought he was more concerned with the food they were being forced to eat. (Mcdonalds, wasn't it?)

Wasn't there something about "I cannot live on a diet of worms?"

I do agree with you, however what about the Christmas tree...Do you know the meaning behind it?

Must confess I don't know - I know why I spent £40 on the big thing in the corner that the cat thinks is its new play thing, but although I do like useless facts and trivia I haven't got the inclination to Google it at the moment - whatever it is it won't alter my intentions over the next couple of weeks

Your off your head!

P.S. The Monks didn't invent brewing, it dates to way before Christianity existed!

Christmas is here once again, seems like an annual thing. Do people really celebrate Christmas for what it is intended to be or like me as an Athiest use it as a holiday to indulge in everything I enjoy doing that which might be frowned on outside christmas.

What is it intended to be???? The celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ???? A high-jacked pagan festival???? Just a load of nonsense to sell stuff at the bleakest time of year???? A time for over-indulgence and selfishness????

I am a Christian...and the Church I belong to doesn't celebrate Christmas...in fact one of our brothers got his virtue name by overturning a Christmas tree in his previous Church.

We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ every day...with fellowship and friendship....December 25th is no special day on our calendar.

Nice user name by the way....Lucifer was an angel of God...before he defected to the dark side and became Satan...oooo....it sounds just like Star Wars...and we all know the good guy always wins :D

As an athiest, I'm afraid that I'm just in it for the pretty trees, jolly songs, time spent with family and friends, and most of all, the look on my little boy's face on Christmas day morning when Santa's been. It's the most wonderful time of the year, I love it.

I know it's a losing battle, but please - it's Father Christmas, not Santa
