Prison for Dubai kiss?

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Dubai.

A Swiss man is still in prison for drugs offences. His crime? Poppy seeds on his clothing from the bread roll that came with his in-flight meal.

A British man, with 5mg of hashish stuck to the sole of his shoe (about the size of a full stop) - same fate.

Dubai welcomes you. Crime Free? hahaha.

Yes i remember these incidents being reported a fair while ago and i am shocked to hear that they are still in prison:o

I just cannot work out why people buy holiday homes in a Country that has such a punitive regime although that market has all but collapsed and bankrupted:confused:

Surely these worrying incidents must put off tourism and holiday makers for fear of innocently breaking some law and springing some trap of horror. Surely people cannot be expected to sit and study rules and regulations before embarking to a Foreign Country on holiday:huh:

A month in a Middle East Prison for a peck on the lips?

Many months in Prison for sandwich crumbs or someone elses tab end on their shoe sole, come on......

A British couple on holiday in this Gulf State have been arrested and detained for kissing on the lips in a Restaurant, a public show of affection which is against the Law. A month in Prison is on the cards.

Alchohol levels above zero are also a crime.

Having visited this Holiday destination i found it bland, slightly intimidating and apart from the nice Hotel and Beach, boring.

Surely it is time to stop visiting places such as this when there are much nicer and safer places to go especially in Europe?

it,s a pity the law in our country only applies to a certain few :rant:

Local laws and customs

Local laws reflect the fact that the UAE is a Muslim country. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs.

Proportionally, Britons are most likely to be arrested in the UAE than any other country in the world. There is zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol

Foreigners make up about 90 percent of the population in Dubai. Its laws are largely based on Egyptian civil law and Islamic law, or Shariah. Dubai is a mix of Islam and a liberal market economy, but it is an Islamic state. In Dubai foreign visitors and workers are considered to be second class human beings. This is how the two worlds (the western world and the Islamic world) co-exist in a what is after all a Muslim country ruled by Islamic law.

Dubai also has the death penalty for a range of 'crimes', including Apostacy (when one leaves the Islamic faith and joins another), Terrorism, Piracy, Adultery and Homosexual behavior

Reinforces what i have been remarking on, why would anyone want to go on a hard earned break to relax with all that facing them? You`d have to watch yourself every step of the way.

A couple of gin and tonics, a smile and a giggle, a stroke on the waist, a peck on the lips, a month in the Nick.

Could you imagine Ibiza practising the same enforcement?

You`d have to change the Islands name to "The Rock".

I agree it is off-putting and tacky seeing couples pet and kiss in public and can be embarrassing and cheapen and spoil your evening out in the restaurant but this appears to be a couple who have had a nice time over a nice meal and he`s leaned over and given her one(a kiss that is), an action that you can see anytime anywhere that goes basically un-noticed or accepted as a normal show of admiration.

Another diner who is by all accounts a Dubai national seated adjacent with her Daughter felt offended by the show and called the sex Police, a total over reaction i feel and not called for, it`s not as though they had to throw a bucket of cold water over them or something...

how do they go on on Valentines night? prepare all the cells?
