SpiderPete   10 #529 Posted August 10, 2011 I cannot see why you would have a "mini-conference" on this point. What is there to discuss?  Less people go to pubs and bars these days. The cost of living plus the lower cost of booze in supermarkets has the bigger role in this. I can remember years ago when bars started putting computers in for people to use to go on gaydar etc. they sat empty half the time.  Im sure there are more important issues people may want to talk about, this is a non-issue.   I have to agree here, it is pointless having a "mini conference", what will it achieve ?.... absolutely nothing.  Cost of living has gone up and also booze cheaper in supermarkets. It isnt cheap now going for a drink and easily pay £3 in all the gay venues for lager.  You dont need some silly conference to tell you what the problem is. Did Angel post on another thread say for example, one concerning the straight nightlife scene in Sheffield asking for those threads to also be on an adult forum similarly? No, thus I suspect Angel was being homophobic in singling out a thread about the gay acene in Sheffield. My suggestion to Angel therefore, would be for her to look for a different forum elsewhere that shares her homophobic antiquated mentality because this one does not
 Share this content via...
Tyranna   10 #536 Posted August 12, 2011  Less people go to pubs and bars these days. The cost of living plus the lower cost of booze in supermarkets has the bigger role in this. I can remember years ago when bars started putting computers in for people to use to go on gaydar etc. they sat empty half the time.   The cheap cost of booze in supermarkets indeed is a factor, as I have found when talking to friends in the clubbing industry; I'm personally disgusted that Government plans in the last couple of years to impose a minimum price per unit for alcohol have been so watered down that they have come to nearly nothing; considering the recent riots, mainly by alcohol-fuelled underage drinkers (and drugs), the Government needs to re-examine the cheap alcohol from shops issue. The advantage with clubs/pubs is that management and security can ensure that only over-18's enter the premises and purchase drink and they have to drink it on the premises, while the problem with bargain supermarket alcohol is that anyone can stockpile it at home and anyone, over or under 18 can drink it without regulation. The Government really needs to look at greatly increasing tax on strong cider, say at least £1 on a litre bottle; this will help pay for essential services such as policing and Health Service, etc., and not only will it help save jobs in the pub/club industry, but it will also give small corner-shop off-licences a more level playing field, as they are often undercut by supermarket alcohol prices.  Rant over, for now... adsmills   10 #538 Posted August 17, 2011 I doubt the recent riots are endemic of the fact that Tesco sells booze cheap. Otherwise I think we would have had much worse pre-recession at a time even the worse off were better off than they are at the moment.  And as for the suggestion that we should be shunted into a forum for over 18's, I think that the forum member had failed to read this thread. This is, at best, a rather dry thread....
 Share this content via...
Tyranna   10 #539 Posted August 22, 2011 As for the suggestion that we should be shunted into a forum for over 18's, I think that the forum member had failed to read this thread. This is, at best, a rather dry thread....  Well said; anyway, the whole of the Forum is supposed to be moderated to a standard appropriate for 'family' access -see the Forum Usage Guidelines- and there is no specific 'adult' section, except if some people use the PM service for dating... Anyway, I have heard that there is supposed to be a new Gay Night, 'NEPSIS' on at 'Revolution', starting on 2nd September, but I cannot get any further information on the matter. I asked at Vodka Revolution off West St., but they have no knowledge of the event, so I am assuming that the 'Revolution' mentioned on the publicity is 'Revolution' at Plug, and Nepsis is probably a rebranding of same. Anyone know any more about this?
 Share this content via...
Bboy   10 #540 Posted August 22, 2011 Hi I know it’s been previously mentioned in this thread but is there any news on Fuel and when it’s due to re-open? I heard a rumour that it might not open. I’m hoping this isn’t the case and was looking forward to a new addition to the scene.
 Share this content via...
