The Sheffield Tap pub - railway station bar

Recommended Posts

Went in on saturday night with my wife.

It's often a debate where to go for a drink when we are out together, because I love my real ales and she just wants a decent glass of wine. You wouldn't think that was impossible would you? And it isn't. But it's not easy either in many of the real ale pubs. I cannot understand why a publican could consider it important to have a great selection of real ales and then sweet fa when it comes to choice of wines - or simply cheap, awful wines.

I can't persuade my wife to go to the Rising Sun in Fulwood for this reason. How many hand-pulled beers? Maybe a dozen - and nicely kept too. And wines? yes they have some - they are the cheap and nasty. Last time we wen there she had a white, which was appalling and left it - so we tried a red - which wasn't much better.

Anyhow, I had persuaded her that this wouldn't be the experience in the Sheffield Brewery Tap. And it wasn't.

In fact, they had NO white wine at all. NONE!

I ordered a red then - and that was cheap and nasty.

So, that's another real ale pub that I have to cross off my list when making these dual visits!

Shame!

(congratulations to the 3 Tuns in Dronfield though - they have a really nice selection of reasonable wines - why can't more pubs be like this?)

All I'm going to say is you don't go to McDonald's if you fancy pizza. ;) Plenty of wine bars out there that don't do good beer!

Your correct ! if you want beer at a competitive price or a choice of drink, try else where, lots of us do !! as per usual customer service at the Tap fails, cant be bothered with a chalk board, price list or offering a simple wine !!

"All i am going to say is you dont go to McDonalds if you want pizza"

HOWS THAT FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ? again the Tap scores an own goal ! Cocky, rude and unconcerned!!

There is no reason that a good "real ale" pub cannot also stock a good range of wine, good whiskies, good lagers and a decent range of soft drinks. The Blake seems to have a good choice. The Wellington is good for Malt Whisky but the wine is pretty rank.

It's a shame when a pub is either incapable or unwilling to cater for a range of customers.

(Apart from Carling drinkers) ;)

Thanks for that. I don't work at the Tap and from the sound of it, you're not a customer so customer service is hardly the relevant issue and your near-abusive rant was misdirected.

The Tap is a self proclaimed "World Beer Freehouse" and as such, specialises in beer. In addition, in order to satisfy a broader clientelle, it also offers a choice of wines - 2 whites, 3 reds and a rose. So a few people don't like the wines on offer... No one ever complained to me about them whilst I was there and I happened to think they were rather nice!

Obviously you can't please everyone all the time (have you ever tried!?), not without losing grip on what you're really about, and that's the point I was trying to make. Call me rude, arrogant and cocky if you like, I'm not going to rise to the name calling. If you don't like The Tap, don't go there, you just can't expect a place like that to drop everything to bend to your personal whim each time you have a niggle.

May be a bit cheeky, but if you're all out of white wine you could always suggest Kasteel Cru? :D

Please read my posts again, Abusive !! please !!. And let the record show, you have just left the Tap but still work for the group and feel the need to still be a Tap spokesman.

I have been in the trade, a real ale house at that, customer service is very important to me. Your attitude and responces have done you no favours at all.

I am an ex customer of the Tap, your attitude would highlight the pubs problems , rude, arrogant and cocky !!

Customers suggestion are just swept under the carpet, The Taps stance on a board for prices and beers is a prime example, other pubs do it, but for the Tap.... ITS TOO MUCH TROUBLE !!

Customer service, repeat business, competitive pricing, Understanding staff, happy customers all add to the pub experience. And that Sir is why i am an ex customer..the Tap is lacking in the above.

I can't and won't speak for the Tap anymore but I personally won't be losing any sleep over the fact you'll not be going there again. Happy drinking! ;)

I went to the Tap last Friday and there was a fabulous choice of beers.

The Old Freddy Walker was on particularly good form, if a little pricey at nearly £5.00/pint.

The thing is I could probably find 200 pubs in Sheffield that don't sell a decent choice of beers with only the generic rubbish like John Smiths.....I won't go to them.

The Tap are catering for people like me who aren't interested in the many pubs that sell rubbish beer. If you want good wine then go to a wine bar. Pubs only have so much space to stock their product, quite clearly the Tap use that space to be a specialist beer bar. It certainly seems to be working for them, as the place was packed.

Regards

The number of "standard" pubs in the city selling real ales is growing at a vast rate, and at what seems reasonable rates.

In addition to the many fine real ale houses Sheaf View, Kelham Island etc.

Pubs such as the Cricketers and Sportsman once reknown for Stones and John smith , both offer a selection of real ales, If such pubs are turning to real ale , we are on the UP. Happy days:love:

Not only that the reasonable pricing of real ale seems to be drawing all pubs to be more competitive, £2 - £2.30 for real ale in the 4-4.2% range is common place in so many venues.

Long may it continue.

I think the wine issue is a good point. It is tricky to get a proper ale and a decent glass of vino in the same place. However, I`d suggest that this is due to the wastage potential; if a punter just wants one glass of wine from a bottle then there`s probably going to be a lot wasted as wine doesn`t keep once opened.

Granted, then supply small bottles, many pubs do, As for the Tap am sure they will cover their costs wastage or not.

Am sure customers are not expecting vintage wines here, just a reasonable choice at reasonable rates. No one would expect a wine celler in an ale house, The Mallard in Worksop had a selection of weird and wonderful wines, The Sheaf view has a good selection of Whiskeys. Both good ale houses offering the customers choice and a selection of alternative drinks.
