Train timetable changes December 2008

Recommended Posts

New train timetables come into operation on 14th December, and there are some significant changes to watch out for...

Northern Rail

A new hourly service is being introduced from Leeds to Nottingham, 7 days a week. It will call at Wakefield Kirkgate, Barnsley, Meadowhall, Sheffield, Dronfield, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Langley Mill and Nottingham. This will mean there will be 3 trains an hour from Sheffield to Leeds via Barnsley (2 fast ones and 1 slow one) and 4 trains an hour from Sheffield to Barnsley. It will also mean a half hourly service from Sheffield to Nottingham, and of course it will give Dronfield it's best ever train service. Sheffield to Chesterfield passengers will also benefit from a more frequent service.

The Northern Rail website can be found at http://www.northernrail.org.

East Midlands Trains

The Liverpool to Norwich trains will be calling at Liverpool South Parkway as well as Liverpool Lime Street, giving easy access to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Most trains will no longer call at Langley Mill, meaning journeys to Nottingham will be slightly faster and potentially more punctual. Passengers for Langley Mill should use the new hourly Northern Rail service instead.

The Sheffield to London route will see most services operated by the newer, more modern class 222 'Meridian' trains and the majority will be non stop between Leicester and London. This combination will mean faster journey times, with most trains taking 2 hours and 10 minutes to get to London. The Meridian trains have power operated doors, electronic reservation labelling and electric plug in points for laptops. At seat refreshment service will be available on many weekday trains. Also note northbound trains are leaving at completely different times to now.

Other changes on East Midlands Trains include a more frequent Matlock to Derby service and the introduction of a Sunday service on the Worksop to Nottingham line.

The new East Midlands Trains timetables are available to download at http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk.

Cross Country

A standard hour timetable is to be introduced with trains every hour from Sheffield to Reading and Sheffield to Plymouth heading south (both via Birmingham) and heading north an hourly service to Scotland via Leeds and an hourly service to the North East via Doncaster. Some of the busiest trains on the Scotland to Plymouth route will see the classic High Speed Trains reintroduced, these trains have 8 carriages so many more seats. The interiors will have been refurbished to the same standard as the newer 'Voyager' trains currently used. All Cross Country trains will have an at seat trolley refreshment service instead of a shop or buffet.

Find out more at http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk, the new timetable is in the online journey planner.

All operators timetables can be searched with the National Rail Enquiries service - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Unfortunately that won't improve in the near future as the line is running to capacity. As well as the Hope Valley local service, the Liverpool-Norwich express and Cleethorpes-Manchester Airport express, there is a lot of freight traffic. It will require a multi-million pound investment in the infrastructure to increase capacity before any increases in frequency are possible.

However, Network Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority have both published consulatation documents which demonstrate their 10 year vision for the route which subject to funding and political will could happen. I believe the Hope Valley Rail Users Group are holding a public meeting with guest speakers tonight in Hathersage to discuss this very subject.

The Users group is for passengers the length of the Hope Valley Line from Sheffield to Manchester and the meeting was open to all. I only know about it because I saw the poster on Dore & Totley station!

I know it wont improve in the near future , I get rather mad when there is a better service to/from Manchester from Dore than 7 mins down the line from Sheffield Midland

Will be intresting to hear what went on at that meeting

Are these the more 'local' sort of trains with the engine under the floor rather than the 'mainline' types with an engine at the front (and/or back)? I prefer the latter as there is a lot more noise and vibration from the engine under the floor.

by any chance does anyone know what the times will be for leeds to meadowhall after 5.30 weekdays?

Is there are a link anywhere on the web for the new times?

I'm praying there's a first train to meadowhall between 5.30 and 5.45. It'll end 5 years of pain!!

That sounds good - 2 hours 10 min to get from Sheffield to London. I wonder how many years in advance you have to book tickets to get the best deal;)

The 222s are 'grand' local trains in they have engine under each carriage, bit like the cross country voyagers.

proper trains with dedicated engines either end are sadly now out of favour other than a few HSTs operated by Arriva Xcountry and EMT.
