I saw a feature on TV about the Eglu, an all plastic chicken coop that also claims to be entirely fox proof. There are some tips on keeping chickens on their homepage too.

EDIT: Just been reading the site and they also deliver the coop with up to three chickens to your door, provided you are within the delivery area (I checked with my postcode - city centre - and I am). It's not cheap (yes, yes, I know) though - 329.99 notes for the coops, £369.99 all inclusive with three chickens and feed etc.

Go to Chatsworth House, there are chickens wandering about in the car park, and chicken-nap a couple.

Don't you need a rooster too, the hens have to get laid before they can lay ?

I just read this on the website I posted :

Omlet only supply organically reared female chickens so there isn't an early morning ****-a-Doodle-Doo. The first your neighbours will know of your new pet is when you invite them round for a quiche and tell them proudly that you made it with your own home grown eggs!

I thought that was a bit odd too...

Really? Blimey, you know, I never knew that.

I've suddenly really gone off eggs though :(

I had 4 chickens a few years ago, little black & white bamptoms, they were great and fed them all the family food that was wasted even mashed up the tea from the bags.

All was well 4 foot high fence which i soon found out they could get over but my neighbour was paranoid about getting salmonela poisoning from them and called in the council.

I was asked to get rid so as well as fresh eggs for a few months we had fresh chicken for a week.

I used to love how they picked at your toes and go into the coop and huddle up together when it gets dark.

First check your lease to ensure you can have them. Many leases don't as they're classed as 'livestock'. I once had a lease that said I couldn't keep any 'crowing cocks'!
