igm1
Unfortunately for the Blades, even if they had won they still wouldn't have got into the playoffs.

madowl
Sheff Wed 4-1 Norwich Sheffield Wednesday avoided relegation from the Championship with a handsome win over Norwich, despite conceding an early lead to the visitors. Darren Huckerby's long-range shot gave Norwich the lead, but Wednesday hit back through a Deon Burton penalty. Some poor Norwich defending allowed Ben Sahar to put Wednesday ahead, before the hosts added two more goals. Bartosz Slusarski crossed for Burton's second goal, and Leon Clarke's left-footed shot wrapped up the points. The final goal sparked wild celebrations at a sold-out Hillsborough as the Owls ended a wretched season on a high note - and Burton was the hero of the hour. A crowd of 36,208, the biggest in the Championship this season, was a fitting send-off for the Owls and popular manager Brian Laws, whose side has been decimated by injury throughout the campaign. Well done Sheffield Wednesday. Our support today was massive and a credit to the team !!!!!! Norwich made a stunning start to silence the Wednesday hordes, with Huckerby, who might not be at Carrow Road next season, combining with Dion Dublin in the eighth minute to slice open the home defence. Norwich had chances to increase their lead, but out of the blue the Owls were handed a lifeline. Burton and Jason Shackell went one-on-one for a ball over the top and referee Mark Clattenburg had no hesitation in awarding a penalty when the Owls striker went tumbling just inside the box Burton held his nerve to convert the penalty and Wednesday looked much more assured after the break. Dublin was given a standing ovation to mark the end of his colourful 22-year career when he was replaced by Jamie Cureton with 25 minutes left. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheff Wed: Grant, Beevers, Wood, Johnson, Spurr, Watson (Kavanagh 55), Bolder, Songo'o (McAllister 55), Burton, Sahar (Clarke 82), Slusarski. Southampton 3-2 Sheff Utd John was Southampton's hero, but came close to being the villain Southampton secured their Championship status with a rollercoaster win that saw them relegate Leicester, who had been a place above them in the table. Saints went behind to a Stephen Quinn header but Marek Saganowski levelled. Stern John then put Southampton in front and on course to stay up before substitute Jonathan Stead's equaliser. John struck again to save Saints from relegation but the striker was sent off on 80 minutes and the hosts were forced to endure a tense finish. As Saints fans watched their 10-man team protect a narrow lead for the final 10 minutes of their season, they waited nervously for news of Leicester's match at Stoke. The Foxes, who started the day ahead of Southampton on goal difference, could have saved themselves by matching Saints' result but were held 0-0. Southampton's task had been made more difficult by the fact they faced a Sheffield United side who went into the match knowing they had a chance to sneak into the play-off positions. And the Blades began in determined form, veteran midfielder Gary Speed seeing a header deflected over the top and Rob Hulse shooting high and wide. The sell-out St Mary's crowd began to find their voice as the hosts settled and came into the game. But they were stunned into silence on 23 minutes when Billy Sharp curled in a deep cross from the right which Quinn met with a firm header back across Richard Wright and into the net. Saints responded and Saganowski twice came close to equalising, with a header which hit Matt Kilgallon and a point-blank drive blocked by Paddy Kenny. However, the Blades were denied what could have been a killer second goal by a superb save by Wright from Kilgallon's header. Moments later, St Mary's erupted when Euell's swirling cross was converted by Saganowski at the far post. A re-energised Saints emerged after the break and six minutes into the second half Saganowski lofted the ball into the box and John cracked a shot into the roof of the net. At that point, Saints were on course to avoid the drop as Leicester were being held by Stoke. Yet there were more twists to come and United substitute Stead levelled when he poked home Quinn's cross from close range. Once again, Saints were back in the bottom three by goal difference and heading for League One. But they were not to be denied and on 69 minutes John latched on to John Viafara's header, turned inside the area and shot low past the wrong-footed Kenny. Still there was more drama when John was shown the red card for his second bookable offence when he fouled Derek Geary. Yet despite their numerical disadvantage, Saints held on to send St Mary's into scenes of wild celebration. ..................................................................................................... Farmboy
That's the third time I've heard/read that we were 'lucky' today. 4-1 isn't lucky. 2-1 can be lucky. 1-1 is lucky when you've been behind all game. 4-1 is a hammering in anyone's book. Well done Owls, hard lines Blades. All the comments of 'you were lucky' is just another Blade who can't find it in himself to say 'Yeh, you did alright.' Plenty of those types on the blue side as well before any blade decides to have a pop.
Zaytsev
Nah 4-1 is NOT lucky, come on fellow blades put the brain in gear. Don't get me wrong I still have an intense dislike for the swine in S6 but fair play to em they did what was needed. Even if we had won today we wouldn't have made the play-offs so here's looking forward to the next season now that the blades have shaken off the Premiership hangover and the debacle of Robson. UTB You're right about the lucky comments. Wednesday deserve congratulations for determining their own fate during the last game of the season. The win ensured that whatever other teams did had no bearing on the Owls final fate. I can't fathom how anyone can class a 4-1 win as lucky and even as a Blade fan I think that sour grapes are definitely not in order. Credit where credit is due.
