  1. Get this checked out by someone who's qualified. If the boiler is operating properly, the steam is just water vapour and CO2. If there's a fault in the boiler, it can contain carbon monoxide. In the short term, consider installing a carbon monoxide detector in the room or at least ensure the window is kept closed and is well sealed. See this web page which has some good references and advice for a situation that sounds similar to yours... http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Home-and-Garden/DIY/Question690757.html "all the new regulations" are there to protect you from this sort of situation.

  3. Have a look on the CTC website... http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3510 I'd recommend Butterworths on Catchbar lane for the bike. What sort of touring will you be doing?
  4. When my grandmother started having memory problems the staff at the Hunters Bar branch were absolutely fantastic, going well beyond the call of duty for her. That said, when the Hunters Bar branch closed we opened an account for her at the Halifax branch at Nether Green and the staff there were also very understanding and accommodating. Recently our experience with the Yorkshire bank has been extremely poor and we are in the process of moving accounts away from them.
  5. There are two Butterworths, one on Abbeydale rd roughly opposite the Broadfield pub and the other on Catchbar lane. Both are very good but the Abbeydale road one is geared a bit more towards the cheaper end and the Catchbar one a bit more towards the racing cyclist. They used to be owned by brothers but both have retired now.
  6. That is not a proof, it's someone with a theory that covers part of the situation. The theory is based on EPA data which (using the links from the article) does not appear to include aerodynamic drag and as such must be considered seriously flawed. More importantly, it does not take into account acceleration which happens frequently on the type of street that the proposed law would affect.
  7. I'd be very interested to see that claim substantiated! It takes approximately half the energy to accelerate a car to 20mph than it takes to 30mph. Couple this with a reduction in aerodynamic drag - again approximately half and there will be significant fuel savings from obeying the law.
  8. What this report is saying is that the current definition of excessive speed is wrong and needs changing to reduce child road accidents by 67%. And as someone else pointed out, if you don't want the government to profit from this then obey the law.
  9. Hmm, interesting, you advocate respect and yet complain about measures to enforce what must be the most important expression of respect - consideration for other peoples safety. The government do not introduce laws like this lightly, they know they are unpopular but the key fact from the article you reference is - "child road accidents fell by 67%" - is this not a good enough reason for the law? As for enforcing the law, an unenforced law is worse than no law as it sends the message that it is ok to to ignore laws which is not good for society. Would you like it if the police decided not to enforce the burglary law in your area - no I though not.
  10. The Sabatier brand is now used by several manufacturers - some are very good and some aren't (I have some which are pretty mediocre). A friend who is pretty fussy uses Global knives. If you want good Sheffield knives like Taylors Eye Witness try the Sheffield shop on Eccleshall road just up from Berkley precinct.
  11. Best bet is Pinders which is on Moore street opposite Wicks. You can park round the back on Hodgson street and there is a back entrance.
  12. Well, the pedestrian crossing on the Hangingwater junction is next a fairly large old persons residence and now my 92 year old grandmother can get to the shops without being scared to death of being run over by some dozy git running the lights (which were never timed to allow pedestrians to cross). If you think that's insufficient reason to slightly delay the traffic through that junction then what I think of you cannot be repeated.
  13. A friend of mine who has many black belts in various martial arts said he thinks they're pretty much useless for self defence. His advice is to talk your way out of it, run away or as a _very_ last resort, completely loose it - kick bite scratch - anything but just go completely wild - not defending yourself but attacking your attacker.
