The 2010/2011 snow Megathread
nosy nellie replied to Bethsmummy's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
About an inch at Stannington and still coming down heavy,so I am guessing the buses will stop running within the hour.lol.No human life form beyond Malin Bridge again. -
I wonder if this is the same little Hitler who in a fit of pique has had all the comfortable armchairs moved from under the window where all the pensioners sit in comfort and replaced them with straight backed dining chairs. ( smacks of ageism). Numerous complaints about this but it seems in The Rawson the customer is always wrong. Not a pub but a Dictatorship.

I agree Pop he used to come down Rudyard Road quite a lot I think he had relatives down there,he was always polite and friendly.

Falling asleep resting on the fireguard. Having a fall of soot. Setting the chimney on fire. Pegging rugs. Going across the yard to the toilet in the snow. Donkey stoning the steps as poor as they were the grates and the paving slabs outside were washed every week. How maddening it was when you were reading the newspaper hung on the back of the toilet door and the most interesting bit was missing,no wonder we called it the reading room. -
You will find out some of the staff in The Rawson are very nice and work hard and the rest of the staff let them and eventually the good staff leave. I must agree about Hitler I know who you mean, what it needs is a clear out of staff and some new staff who will be more interested in their work instead of watching the television.

Hello Arnie I knew Pete Rodgers and David Lacy was in my class at school did Janis have a sister called Norma? I have forgotten their surname They live near Burberry's. I was talking to a friend of mine and we were discusing all the different people who had taken over the corner shop this is the list I wonder if anyone could fill in the ones we could not remember. The first ones I remember was Nellie Bocking, then Wombwells they had two daughters, After them came Helen and Jack Croft they had one son. Then Brearleys who had a son and a daughter. After them came Daffs they had three children after this we cannot remember any more. The other corner shop we can only remember Masseys and Tittertons. Mrs Moore rings a bell but not sure.

Norris Cole's offering tonight has got to be one of the classic lines from Corrie. (You have got to hand it to the Barlows, you always get your money's worth at a wedding). It seems now Blanche has gone we don't get so many of these quips but I thought tonight episode was really funny even though it was not meant to be.

We did walk up the river but never dared walk all the way up to the paddling pool. However did we survive all the pranks we got up to all that muck and Rats down in the river, we must have been made of stronger stuff in those days,we wern't mollicoddled and I must say I think the river was a lot cleaner then or am I looking through rose tinted specs. I have sent you a P M about names you asked for. It was Neville Bocking who was burnt. Bockings lived in our yard and Baxters lived next door but one to us before they moved to take a pub. I remember Beachells and Mrs Townroe.

Did Margaret Roe marry a Grayson or am I getting mixed up again.I used to take one of the children to school for them and I don't know if it was Margaret or Allan.Yes we lived at 30 Rudyard Road. We also used to play on what we used to call the bank which led to the wall between Rudyard and Burdalls we could get between the corrugated metal sheeting. Mrs Willey used to keep chickens on the bank because she lived in the house at the side of the bank I remember one day my brother let all her chickens out and they were running all over the bank he was very young and was just curious.

Sorry Kid I still don't remember the Olivers and I lived at number 30 and was born there in my grandmothers house but maybe a bit before my time. I am just trying to think about that side of the road and I can't remember any families only the Burberry's.I will give it a bit more thought it's an age thing.

If I rememberr correctly the Brearleys had a few family extended relations living down Rudyard just like everyone else down there, Arthur and Edna lived in our yard when they had the corner shop.I still see two of the triplets shopping down Hillsborough and I think they had another sister Eva. I have also asked people on here about the Tarzan field and playing down the Dyke and in the river and walking under the Bridge when the river was low in the summer I think we could walk up towards Limbrick under the bridge. No staying indoors for us we were always out and about and just going home when we were hungry.

I didnt know anyone called Oliver how long ago are you talking about? I remember Randy's chip shop,Agnes's little shop just further down from Randy's further down was Baxters fruit shop. On the other side were two corner shops,Masseys and Bockings, which changed hands quite a few time so were known my other names as well, but I am talking about the first shopkeepers I remember.
