  1. Currently live in Anston and really like it. Takes about 25 minutes to drive into Sheffield in the morning at 6.45 am, and about 45 minutes to an hour to get back at 5.00pm. Buses are pretty regular. Taxi home from Sheffield is about £25.00. Nearest railway station is Kiveton Park which is about 5 miles away. Good infant and junior schools, and where we are has a very good community feel. Crime is also pretty rare

  3. It was lying in the middle of the outside lane as I was driving into Sheffield and I did not stop to check. The only thing I noticed was that it did not look to be very big (although I don't know a lot about cats). It's gone now so may be worth a call to the council to see if they collected it.

  4. There you are then, a man in a million, try the chippies in england and ask what the customers ask the fish they want.

No-one is saying that cod haddock and the other popular varieties should not be caught and sold, and will be the market leaders for the foreseeable future.

The point is that many of these most popular fish (and others) are being dumped back into the see dead instead of being landed and sold.

  5. People generally wantv to eat cod or haddock as Hugh explained a lot of people would not entertain pollock, saithe, gurnad and other tyres of fish.

My wife won't entertain mussels, whelks and other shellfish, she will only eat white meat from fresh crab but will used the brown meat from tinned crab. There is no accounting for other peoples tastes. Not many people will eat "eascargot" either because the fact of eating snails makes them feel sick.

How many types of other fish have you eaten ?.

Having lived all over the world over the past 40+ years, I have probably eaten in excess of 70 varieties of fish (including shellfish) and hardly ever buy cod, haddock, salmon etc for home. I also always try and buy line caught fish wherever possible.

The point still remains that fishermen are being forced to dump perfectly edible fish back into the sea dead because they have already reached their quota. This is totally unbelievable and unacceptable to me and many others, and does absolutely NOTHING for conservation, the fishermen's livelihoods and in all probability is a factor in keeping fish prices at the levels that they are at (due again to supply and demand). Do you really think that this makes more sense than landing the fish and selling them or giving them away?

If the fish were still alive then I could probably understand the policy. It is blatantly obvious that the quota system is not working properly and needs a massive overhaul.

  6. I don't have to explain, It is all down to fishing quotas, fish size and other rules of the EU, thought you might have reslised that. Oh yes I saw the program but you have to realise that these chefs ( cooks really who like to use a french name ) are all in to furthering themselves and their business, nothing wrong with that, everyone wants to be famous.

So you cannot explain then... glad that's sorted

  7. You like a " lost cause " then. We are always after cheaper food to let the budget go further, if you want to go you route and pay higher prices for selective ways of buying your food, good for you, I am for the other way, my family mean more to me than a fish.

Perhaps you would like to explain how dumping over half of each catch dead into the sea instead of bringing it ashore to sell makes food cheaper ? Bringing it into shore would result in increased supply and so decreasing price (basic economics)

Or maybe you did not see the programme and are just trolling.

  8. You are missing a part of the Glendinning case- police do not have to prove motorists were speeding, it is enough to show there was a likelihood of them speeding.

now given police had set up speed trap- I think this is a very low standard to meet. I mean why would police be there if there was no likelihood of motorists speeding.

Also, why was defendant flashing motorists if he didn't think there was a likelihood of them speeding?

This is the judgement from this case.

HELD: The actus reus of the offence could only be established where the prosecuting authority proved that those warned were either exceeding the legal speed limit or were likely to do so at the location of the speed trap. On the facts of the instant case it was clear that there was no actual obstruction by G, Bastable v Little (1907) 1 KB 59, Betts v Stevens (1910) 1 KB 1, Green v Moore (1982) 126 SJ 79 considered.

The judges held that, because there was no evidence that any other drivers were influenced by his signal and slowed down as a result, Mr Glendinning did not obstruct the police

In law, the fact of the police having set up a speed trap does not mean there is a likelihood of anyone speeding at all. In fact the chances of proving that someone who actually saw the driver flashing his lights was likely to have been speeding is damn near impossible to substantiate.

Mr Justice Owen also commented obiter "some people might think the police ought to appreciate the efforts of others to prevent speeding"

As we all know, speed cameras are ONLY placed in places which are deemed as high risk/accident black spots (and not just to generate cash . Therefore to "advise" motorists to slow down approaching said area of high risk is only a good thing, is it not? You are providing a service to remind motorists of the danger ahead.;)

  9. Wife has had a 54 Scenic from new and would NEVER have another Renault. We have had to have 3 windows replaced when they fell off their runners, the rain sensor wiper activator is a complete nightmare but cannot (apparently) be switched off or overridden, it has no power (1.5 DCi), it's like driving a jelly, everything sounds really "tinny", interior trim finish is poor quality. Only good point is fuel consumption of 50+ mpg.

  10. Missing since Saturday in the Sheffield 11 area (Greystones Road). Mainly white with some ginger patches, wearing a blue velvet collar with tag with contact phone number on it. The cat answers to "Squeak" and is micro-chipped. If anyone sees it please PM me. Many thanks

  11. Temporary workers are legally entitled to a minimum of 28 days paid leave per year under the Working Time Directive. A day should be calculated as how many hours are normally worked i.e if he normally works 7.5 then that should be classed as a normal working day for holiday pay purposes. However his contract may say that a normal working day is 6 hours and that the extra 1 1/2 hours per day is single rate overtime. In that case it may be possible to argue that a days holiday is 6 hours but I would be very surprised. If you PM me the name of the agency I will have a look into things for you.
