I don't think the police are covered by the Health and Safety at work act, other wise they would never start work. The majority of manual workers killed are accident, probably avoidable and caused by pressure from an uncaring and incompetent management. Not many get shot when questioning a stopped motorist but police officers do.

For the speeders. Today I drove on the A59 from Harrogate almost to Skipton, A 59national speed limit road. I was part of a line oh vehicles, about seven in front and maybe the same behind. The speed we were travelling at varied between 50 and 60. In the 17 miles that I drove no one tried to overtake. Gaps of three car lengths were certainly between the vehicles in front of me and by most of the cars behind. There was no jamming on of breaks because some one was racing about. It proves that at a reasonable speed on a not straight road which has it's share of shrines to the mad driver that it is possible to keep all traffic moving with a little bit of thought and consideration.

Maybe they would have if the "I will speed if I want to" brigade would obey the speed limits. As with "You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink" , so you can put up all the warning signs but not make people obey them. If the signs are ignored the one must suffer the consequences. Be it paint on the hands or a sixty pound fine.

If speed cameras don't stop speeding then burglar alarms don't stop burglaries idea is to deter the offender. You lock your door to keep people out, the lock is the deterrent. CCTV on a house is a deterrent if the camera picks up a burglar and he is then identified by the police then it was useful. If the burglar had seen the camera and committed the crime then again it served it's purpose. The atomic bomb is a deterrent, so be it with the traffic camera.

Don't tell me that you have not been driving and been overtaken by some one speeding and then found that two miles further down the road they are just two cars in font of you. They have gained sod all. Probably annoyed you so that you may do something just as stupid and it may be you that has the accident. A recent speed check in this village showed that the average speed in the 30 zone was 37 mph. Most of those caught speeding actually live in the village. We now have a 20 mph speed limit with speed indicator signs. Estimated average speed 27 mph. There is of course the idiot who will not take any notice of the signs. Speed traps are going to come on in a week or so.

Safer for the majority but then along comes the I don't care driver and the whole system goes to pot. It has been proved that if drivers on motorways kept at 5 mph below the speed limit, it would leave a margin of speed to overtake. Traffic moves smoother, fewer hold ups and oddly enough the journey times are not extended by much. Better to travel for one hour at 50 mph than twenty minuets 90 the 20 minuets at 35, the 20 minuets in a traffic jam at 3 mph

On a road near where I live there were two or three accidents a month mostly caused by speed. Speed cameras have been in place for a year now and because there are warning signs telling drivers that the cameras are there not one accident and very few caught speeding. Something must be working.

I am not saying anything about secularisation. my comments are aimed at the people who do not have a belief making statements that they are right because they believe in nothing. After the first Gulf war is it not true that the UN troops were not allowed to celebrate Christmas because they were in a Muslim country, or if they did keep a low profile. From another angle during the Raj in India the native troops could not understand why the European troops celebrated the birth of the son of God by getting drunk and fighting. All these complaints that speed cameras are a way of collecting money, a stealth tax. It is the one tax that you can legally get away with not paying. Don't speed. The life you save may be your own, not to mention the money.
