  1. When Madonna visits her friends in Mexborough they go to a little restaurant on London Road.
  2. I am a member of the Conservative party. It is the states responsibility, and has always been Tory policy, throughout the 20th century, to ensure there is a safety net below which no citizen should fall. The financial disaster labour lead us into, is being addressed, millionaires abound, London is thronged with the very rich from all over the world. We are a rich country. No one should be allowed to starve, no child should go without a meal. EVER. That is genuine right wing politics, not the tommy tough tripe some of you churn out.
  3. It is wrong to castigate the poor. Those who are in genuine need should be supported and helped to live in a decent manner. In my opinion what has failed in the UK is the administration of welfare. Those who know how to work the system seem to prosper. Those who do not, seem to fall between the cracks. It is truly shameful that anyone in the UK goes hungry. Welfare should cease to be a political football. It should be administered by an independent authority with no political pressure. People must eat, be educated, and must work if they are able to do so, welfare should be available at times of illness, unemployment or other similar circumstance. No one should starve.
  4. Before I returned to live here I was told that Leeds had "left Sheffield standing", that we were still in the doldrums and the future was not so good. I went to Leeds for a weekend to see some friends. I have come to the firm conclusion that Sheffield is a far better place to live, better all round, nicer people, pleasanter environment. The Moor needs sorting, get that done and we are laughing.
  5. Tennants owned Wileys a wine and spirit merchants who had a warehouse and distribution place on Castlegreen just below the Hen and Chickens, also they had a smaller W/S merchants called Porter Wright and company who focused more on the posher trade. Wileys had an in house whisky called Wileys Black label and Porter Wright had one called Moorland Blend also Porter Wright had in house cigarettes called ( I think) Porter Wright No 2, Turkish tobacco which made ordinary cigs tastleless they were so strong. MD of porter Wright was Major Max Cockayne an absolute gent. Captain Francis of Tennants had been invalided out of the army in the first world war following an accident in an armored car. His son John went on to become a director of Whitbreads when they bought Tennants out. Colonel Wise was a nice guy, very posh but approachable. Captain Francis was a bit fierce but ok when you got to know him a bit. The commissionaire was called "Sarge" wore his medals with pride. knew everything about everybody. Nice bloke. Happy days the sixties, everything was changing not necessarily for the best, but a good time to be around.
  6. Sir Geoffrey Hillpig Smyth, inventor of the trekking pole, knighted in absentia, a hero of Burmese liberation, thought to have gone missing in Myanmar in the 1950s is buried in City Road cemetery.
  7. Enjoy your trip, its actually ok down there, plenty to see. Cant advise you on camping though, but have a good time.
  8. A striped Blazer and yachting cap are essential. It would help if you were to bone up on the various types of Pimms. Whatever you do try to avoid your (presumably) Sheffield accent. You may frighten the livestock and the locals will not understand you. Remember to carry your Tory party membership card, could be essential in an emergency.
  9. Great memories of Menzels. Sitting in the upstairs restaurant looking down in to the bar. Never missed a Xmas eve for years. Nor many Saturdays either. Is Michael still around?
  10. Legalise the lot, prohibition has never worked. Treat addiction as a medical issue. Crime would drop to 1950s levels. We would save a fortune.
  11. I am a newcomer to this city, and I am very happy to be here after many years in the South. I find it quite beautiful, If you get to any vantage point the views are really impressive. If something could be done about litter, that would further enhance the city.
  12. There are more trees in Sheffield than any other city in the UK.
