  1. The Council test centre on Staniforth Rd or rather around the back of it do all the City's taxi's and are stricter than strict! They are so nick picky I would not go there as they are not even that fair either. Yes they might align your head lights and will let you change a bulb or wiper whilst there but they don't let anything slight pass. They are used to dealing with taxi's that can do 60k in a year so they have to strict but on a car 2-3 k a year I would go anywhere but. If you do want a damn good mot to taxi standards then go to the Council. I used to take my taxi a PH for a 'cheap mot' to find out what if anything was needed and it would pass or I would at least put right what if anything it failed on then take it to the Council. Twice I had it fail on the emissions when it passed easily at the other garage. It was the way they revved the engine which caused the fail and loads of taxi owners challenged the fail because of the way they did the test. Eventually they listened and revved the engines correctly but for at least a couple of years they failed many a cab what even the fuel injection engineers could not find a fault on.
  2. Am I reading right here? If you take a part time job under JSA rates you still get all your benefits and JSA and a bit of part time cash as well? No deductions what so ever? In cash business why not employ apparently part timers and pay just under JSA and the rest in cash no questions asked? Kebab shops come to mind? Mad if you ask me!
  3. It costs about £60 to go back onto a credit meter and thats per meter. Payg meters are usually a higher tariff than credit. You would think as you are paying up front it would be cheaper. If you have a washing machine with a eco or low temp wash button try the 15c washing gel and do a cold wash. Works fine for us and saves on the heating element in the washing machine. Wear slippers and warmer clothes and keep the temp down.
  4. Although 'it is known as double time' say's who? Was it gossip or presumed? I have in my previous employment had a situation that Saturday mornings are double time based on a presumption and not fact. That caused a riot on pay day! Not by me I may add as I have always thought in the particular business I was in at that time that Saturday working was time and a half and Sundays was double. Anyway, on the workers principle any future Saturday working was to be double and Sundays triple. Obviously all weekend working was banned!
  5. For me I visit Cafe's all over the City. If I have some business on Ecclesall Road I will call in what I call 'A posh cafe' and pay quite a bit for a latte. I will also call in a greasy spoon. Now the Greasy Spoon cafe is cheaper, opens early and shuts early 7.30am-2pm. But they have a lot of take away customers and a few sit ins. I am comfortable in both so long as the coffee is hot and the cup/mug is clean. But for turnover I would put my money on the greasy spoon. I sit in the posh ones and see people buy a coffee and a piece of cake and then hog a whole table while they natter to their friends for what must be for ages. The greasy spoon its in, gobble and gulp then on your way! A greasy spoon can be on a back street off the moor, London or Abbeydale Road or any industrial area, although in an industrial area a delivery service is ideal. Apart from The Moor up to Abbeydale Road, easy nearby parking is a must! Good luck with your venture!
  6. Mushy peas: Open tin of Batchelor's mushy peas. Heat. I understand that bit, not to sure about the rest!

  8. We had the same problem to the point where the neighbours could hear it. It was fitted to the fitted wardrobe floor and sent vibrations through the first floor. We have improved it by fitting it on 2 layers of 50mm polystyrene. The first had lots of 20mm holes drilled in it and it was fixed to the floor on spots of silicone. The second piece was fitted on top of the first again on silicone dots. It has improved by quite a bit and the neighbours have stopped complaining.
  9. I find this Chem1st bloke amusing! Private landlords are helping people have somewhere to live. I really don't think a HB claimant is bothered about the taxpayer paying his rent so long as he has a roof over his head. As for forcing the value of property down well what about the poor people who have bought in recent years? They could be forced into negative equity. Does he only care about tenants and not home owners? Selfish of him if you ask me. I know of people who have jumped on the BTL band wagon and they are making very little if anything. It will improve the longer they rent the properties out and it is seen as a long term investment for their retirement in about 15+ years time. Good luck to them I say. You have got to speculate to accumulate. Why cant he rant on about fuel prices and the rising cost of food? I see BP and Shell are always making profits but he doesn't complain about them profiteering. High fuel prices pushes up the price of everything. Anyway, look forward to his next silly housing rant.
  10. I have been reading some Chem1st past posts and he certainly has a bee in his bonnet regarding housing. Well putting the expense of beer to one side, what about the costs of the internet and Iphones the young people have. Also they have cars to run which take up a huge amount of money. Take out the car, internet and phones, and high gas and electric costs maybe they have realised beer is a waste of money and there is better things to spend your money on. As someone above has said, getting stoned is cheaper, and with the smoking ban and the risk of getting breathalysed the next morning it is bad news for the pub landlord.
  11. I had ACA windows in the late 90's and they was ok then but I think technology has moved on since then. I have had some windows fitted last year by Class Windows. 'A' rated and fitted perfectly. Their number is 0114 264 9171 ask for Brian.
  12. It would be quite risky for the driver to get involved and who would have the guts to support him? The passengers may have been made uncomfortable but I notice not 1 passenger had the guts to confront them so why should the driver risk his job for the sake of ignorant passengers? The scum involved knows exactly how to react to anyone who would stand up to them and besides, being kids they are protected, you cant touch them and they know it.
  13. Thanks for your reply's. I have some business coming up in S6 so I will see if the cobbler on Middlewood Rd is still there otherwise it could be the one at the top of Ecclesall Road. Parking near these two cobblers is easy enough.
  14. Marley and me and the ending of To Sir with Love. I had a Labrador who I thought the world of and To Sir with Love reminds me of the day I left School.
  15. Is that the cobbler at Middlewood just up from the old Netto? Thought he had retired. I remember one being at the top of Ecclesall Road near Gilders but I haven,t been up there in a while.
