  1. I couldn't agree more. The highways department seems to be staffed entirely by morons.
  2. Hence my concern at the large number of vehicles on Twentywell Lane (and elsewhere) crossing the centre marking on bends. You can't have a head-on collision if everyone's on the right side of the road. That's the simple beauty of the system that's so often fatally overlooked. I'm not against speed cameras (I too did a course and found it quite enlightening) but reliance on them leads to other aspects of poor driving being ignored. I would love to see a cop on Twentywell Lane dishing out tickets for cutting the corner on bends. Only yesterday I was suddenly confronted by the front wheel of a bicycle, followed half a second later by a pair of handlebars, two arms and a head looking left and right. Fortunately I was going slowly enough to stop otherwise it would have been a quick decision between swerving into the oncoming van (which at least was on the right side of the road for a change) or flattening the brain dead cyclist. Frankly the whole road is like an 80s video game
  3. Yes but you're forgetting that some people have special mental powers and their cars are better than everyone elses and they live inside an invisible energy bubble which means they don't need to worry about unexpected events which cause ordinary drivers to have accidents. They'll be along shortly to tell you who they are.
  4. Which way round should we hang pedants? Sorry, pennants.
  5. Speeding isn't the problem on Twentywell Lane. Badly parked cars and drivers who are incapable of negotiating a bend and staying in the correct lane are a far bigger hazard.
  6. These are still available. Update on tonight's acts: "Dave Twentyman will compare the evening with his cheeky, chatty northern style.. Award winner Phil Nichol will be joined by one of the best female stand-ups around, internationally recognised Susan Murray. And the headline act is David Hadingham.. This gravel-voiced comic combines supremely controlled delivery with inimitable facial contortions as he cracks some of the best handmade gags in the business. It’s set to be a great night out!"
  7. I've got two spare tickets for the Beer and Banger Comedy Night at Whirlow Hall Farm. "Kick back and relax with an evening of side splitting comedy, the city’s best Real Ales from Abbeydale Brewery and our famous Whirlow Hall Farm bangers on the barbeque. Tickets are £22, which includes a pint of Real Ale (wine or soft drinks are available too) a Whirlow banger in a bun and what promises to be a fantastic evening of comedy. We are looking forward to seeing our friend Toby Foster, who will be bringing along a great selection of comedic talent from Sheffield’s very own The Last Laugh Comedy Club. This promises to be a fantastic night, and even better with a group of friends or colleagues. Dress casual as the event takes place in our barn, this venue is totally unique! Bookings for 26th May have started and are moving quickly; remember this is a ticket only event so you need to get yours fast! These events are strictly over 18’s only." Please pm with best offer and phone number.
  8. Possibly, but if you believe the SYSCP's FOI responses, the money from fines is only around 10-20% of the cost of operating the cameras: http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/foi/disclosurelog/syscp-20110046 Interestingly, the guy from Grimsby who was done for "wilfully obstructing a policewoman in the execution of her duty" (he flashed his lights to warn oncoming cars) claimed he was helping the police by slowing the traffic. The court disagreed, suggesting they were more concerned about the loss of revenue.
  9. Cleanest I've ever seen the bar in there is when they refused to serve an underage lass and she swept all the empties off with her arm on her way out. The floor was a bit of a state mind
  10. Avoid all non-steroidal anti-imflammatories (eg aspirin, ibuprofen, nurofen, diclofenac etc etc). Presumably they gave you an advice leaflet?
  11. Depends on how much risk you can take really. An hour should be plenty to Glossop but it only takes an accident somewhere or a bit of bad weather to add substantially to that. Not sure about Hyde but Mottram Moor can be a nightmare so I would say an hour and a half at least to be safe. The main problem is once you're past Glossop there's virtually no scope for detours. You pick your route and hope for the best.
  12. Thanks for the clarification. As I said above I wasn't 100% sure.
  13. http://www.safetycamera.org/Content/filemanager/upload/file/Site%20Operations%20Policy%20-%20website%20version%207July2011.pdf Page 5 "These are set up by the roadside and are attended by a police staff enforcement officer."
  14. I think SY camera vans are operated by police aren't they, not contractors (not 100% sure)? If you block the line of sight you are potentially obstructing an officer in the execution of his/her duty. Pretty sure he would have said something to you though, so probably just a coincidence.
  15. Assuming you're near S8, why not drive to Abbeydale Road Tesco instead? They always do a good job in my experience.
  16. Is that just gas? I think the figures people are quoting here are for gas and electric combined. Nexusdee, either you're leaving your cooker on all night or you're on the wrong tariff.
  17. Definitely on the high side. Have you tried uswitch or one of the other comparison sites?
  18. I was referring to the current national average, not my own bill.
  19. Sorry but I find it very hard to believe a 4-bed semi costs less than £50/month for gas and electric. The current average for a typical (ie 3-bed) home is around £120/month.
  20. Try iish on Chesterfield Road - not far from S12 (near the Big Tree). 0114 235 9666
