ALCOHOL RESTRICTION ZONE APPROVED TO TACKLE ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

People will be able to shop and socialise in Sheffield city centre without encountering anti-social street drinkers from today, thanks to a new Alcohol Restriction Zone.

Following successful consultation with Sheffield businesses and residents, the Licensing Board at Sheffield City Council approved the proposal for an ’Alcohol Restriction Zone’, under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001.

The order, which covers the area inside the inner ring road, aims to tackle anti-social drinking in the street, which can often make shoppers and passers by feel unsafe. It does not apply to street café’s or specifically licensed outdoor events, such as street parties or festivals.

Inside the designated area, police officers can confiscate alcohol from anyone in the street if they think it is causing, or may cause them to behave in an anti-social way.

Failure to comply with the restriction, which applies to open or sealed containers of alcohol, is an offence. People can be fined up to £500.

The order will still allow for licensed outdoor areas to serve alcohol.

I'm all in favour of cracking down on the anti-social scum.

Here’s what I really think – this is another example of how we are so deluded as a race. Another law that attempts to alienate and undermine still further the undesirables. And yet, for me the real antisocial behaviour I have seen goes on in pubs and clubs and is committed by the people that frequent them. I have seen behaviour by office party goers that I have never seen by people who sit on the benches of our towns and drink cheap cider.

And all you tossers who believe that people with social/drink/drug problems are scum may be shooting yourselves in the foot on this one. You may not have to endue the sight of the homeless men and women on your visits to Argos but they may turn up in the suburbs and be drinking their white lightning in your garden. Physically removing someone tanked up on Jet fuel is a lot harder than it looks.

Are the police going to have to spend all their time with people who have urinate themselves in the back of their cars – escorting them from the zone. or do you think they’ll turn a blind eye?

This is an appalling way to treat people in need and it smacks of tokenism because perhaps they do not want to tackle the problem head on and pay for legitimate social care programme; the only sensible option and the one that some of the less educated on here would not fund.

There are more than one types of poverty with perhaps the worse being the poverty of ideas and compassion that the authors of this legislation are committing.

Next time you are in town take some time to get to know some of these people. Buy them some drink and make a new friend, I do this often because tragedies do happen and you could lose your mental health and end up in a similar position of need one day. You never know, one day I may be sat with you making your life more bearable.

How long before someone walks out of an off licence with some beers to take home and a copper decides they don't like the look of them and yoink all their beer?

I admine your love for the un-deserving, you may receive your reward in heaven, but I doubt it.

The alcoholics in town should be shot or rounded up and made to live in Tinsley with the other sub-humans. Anywhere that I don't have to look / smell them is fine.
