Agent Orange   11 #38 Posted March 17, 2007 How much is the joining fee for this club? I tried varios clubs in Sheffield before I must admit I didnt enjoy them as they were pretty harsh with me on my first. I'm not exactly fast nor was I the fittest of people yet they put me off running with groups. I would like to join a running club for support and the social aspect as long runs can get boring. frankief   10 #40 Posted March 17, 2007 Interesting point by Dick. Some athletics clubs have high standards and don't accomodate the casual 'fun runner' type. Thats why Nick's running club could become popular. Athletics is a lot more than the London Marathon and although this event has introduced running to the masses, I wouldn't call someone shuffling around London in 4 hours an athlete. I know we all have to start somewhere, but I can see why some athletics clubs are difficult to get into. But people like Tracey Morris and Paul Evans started out as fun runners. mikel   10 #41 Posted March 19, 2007 Our aim at Sheffield Running Club is fairly straighforward, Dick - to offer group training and support to those just starting out or aiming to do no more than keep fit, right through to elite competitors who may need mentoring, coaching or a quality group to train with, from schoolchildren through to veteran athletes. As Frankief pointed out about Tracey & Paul, they started as fun runners & got serious! Running doesn't just have to be on roads. Sheffield is blessed with wonderful countryside, which is why we train off road as well, not just in the week but on regular Sundays. And some runners convert to cross country and trail racing from the roads, even onto the fells! Distance running not only keeps you fit but is great fun on the competitive side as well. The diffence between our club and others is that we cater for all expectations when it comes to distance running - & we do socialise as well.
