Almost 2 million people in the UK are estimated to be living with long COVID – after-effects of COVID that can persist for months or even years after the initial infection.

Common symptoms include fatigue, breathlessness, muscle and joint pain, cognitive impairment and sleep disruption. People with long COVID also have a higher risk of developing serious heart and lung problems, stroke and blood clots compared to those who have not previously been diagnosed with COVID.

Studies from multiple countries have found that long COVID is linked to an increased likelihood of not working. For example, US research found long COVID was associated with 23% higher odds of being unemployed and 16% lower odds of working full-time (25% for those with cognitive symptoms).

We analysed data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to assess the situation in the UK, and similarly found long COVID to be strongly associated with being out of work.

Cheers WiseOwl, much appreciated.

Some crafty wording there from DWP. Of course it will be at a record high considering the population keeps going up. The number of people on payrolls as a percentage of the working age population would likely tell you a different story.

A spokesperson for the DWP said: "Our plan for the economy is working. Inflation [the rate at which prices rise] is down to 3.4%, employment is up, the number of people on payrolls is at a record high, and inactivity is falling.

It does show how easy it is for the media to spin their news either way.

Inactivity is falling - thats because it was very high during COVID and inactivity was high higher decades ago when wifey stayed at home.

They probably learned how to do it from politicians.😀

Crap covid is just a virus when it's gone it's gone not like pdsd...

Tell that to Derek Draper, husband of Kate Garraway, who died recently aged 56.

Covid evastated his life.  I also have a previously hard working friend who is now permanently disabled following covid.

I've had Covid 3 times with no ill after effects.

Not everybody has been so lucky.

Is it though?

Do you trust the statistics / information?

If it is correct there could be a number of reasons.

2 ways to improve economic growth would be to firstly reduce VAT to make goods and services more affordable and also stop this mad reliance on foreign workers who send the money they earn here to their families in their own countries, meaning it isn't circulating in our economy.

There is growth from spending and there is growth from production. Growth from spending is bad for the economy, unless you believe Jeremy Hunt

What we need is growth from more production. We could do that by getting more people off the NHS waiting lists working and all those workers stuck in traffic, we need to improve our road, rail and bus network.

I agree with that, but it means we have to train the workers, and that hasn't been happening for a long while so we have a shortage. Firms don't like taking on apprentices any more and government apprenticeships are pretty dire. We prefer to pinch trained doctors and nurses from other countries where they are also sorely needed., but coming to Britain to work in our NHS is no longer the dream ticket it once was...

It costs money to train doctors etc which the government says it can't afford. They prefer to spend our money on providing bombs for the Ukraine.

If you reduce VAT, the Government will have less money for the NHS, so the waiting list will increase!
