Leo Tomlinson   51 #1 Posted August 2, 2022 BP have just published profits of 7 billion pounds ,this followed by Shell posting over 9 billion in profits , Our Energy bills are sending people into extreme poverty . We are being conned by our Government or else they would step in and demand that these gangsters in high places who's only concern is to make more and more money for the rich share holders be stopped in their tracks . Is there any sign that we have a party that would step in and stop this immoral situation , the answer is not in this Country . geared   319 #4 Posted August 2, 2022 We got the Government we voted for, we got the Government we deserve. Don't forget what a gigantic majority the public gave them in the last election.  You can't vote a Tory Government into power, then moan about a Tory Government acting to form. crookesey   635 #8 Posted August 2, 2022 It’s no use demanding that the major energy suppliers owe us. What needs to happen is that they want to help their financially under pressure users, which of course they don’t, however they do need persuading, not a bad move for the next Prime Minister, me thinks. The figures quoted are net of tax.
 Share this content via...

Profit figures are quoted. You then say taxes come off those figures. You were mistaken. End of.
 Share this content via...
whiteowl   54 #12 Posted August 2, 2022 It's a bit of a weird one this.  The prices are driven by the global price of oil and gas which has sky-rocketed.  BP/Shell/etc, etc (the suppliers) are selling their product on the open market and as prices are sky high at the moment, they are making excess profit - their operating costs haven't gone up but the money they receive for their product has jumped. British Gas/EoN/EDF/etc, etc (the middle men) are buying the product on the open market and as prices are sky high at the moment, it's costing a fortune which is then passed on the customers (you and me).  The only way I can see prices coming down for the end user, is for the suppliers to start selling their products at lower than the market rate. Is that even possible? Would that fall foul of any laws/regulations - I don't know about that. Would they even want to?  If you'd got a bar of gold in your attic and the value was £100,000 a bar - would you sell for £50,000?
