I'm offering to actually do the work necessary to resolve a problem that someone does not have the time, money or knowledge to resolve. EG - This week, someone had a computer where Windows was getting half way through loading and then restarting constantly and wasn't sure what to do. I came out checked it out.. checked the hardware, found the problem was with the drive.. and after some work left them with a working computer with full internet access back in place and everything hunky-dory. They could have spent ages trying to resolve the problem and found alternate internet access to get advise and try things for days, not necessarily getting anywhere.. or they could pay through the nose for a computer shop.. or they could bung me a single note to do the job there and then that day.. which they did. And they were very happy to have done so. Or as an alternate example, maybe you have a fault with your internet access and your ISP's support line has not been helpful and has been sending you back and forth looking for a problem. Given that I know the industry inside-out, I can come out.. check everything.. bringing spare parts to test with and some extra software and if I can prove (done within 30 mins generally) that the problem is not your side I can call the ISP on your behalf and make them investigate properly talking to them on their level. Etc etc.. Sometimes it's just easier to give me some quick cash to solve your problem immediately rather than waste time and money with other solutions.
