Did Ansell's brewery have any pubs in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

The brewery was based in Birmingham they did have a few pubs in south Derbyshire non in Chesterfield but were their any pubs in Sheffield?

Other Birmingham breweries were M&B (Mitchell and Butler) and Davenport's ('Beer at Home'.). Not sure if the former had pubs in north Derbyshire but used to see the latter delivering in Staveley, Bolsover, Renishaw and Eckington areas in mid-'60s. I heard Davenport's wasn't up to much either.

Iv heard of Mitchell and Butler they still are in business mostly as a pubco. Most brewery's were merged in the end making it hard to understand who owns what. So far it seems Ansells didn't make it this far up North. I went to Ilkeston yesterday noticed a couple of derelict pubs with the Ansells signs so wounded if they had any pubs in Sheffield. For what Iv read Ansell's mild was very popular with the customers.

I think M & B was a subdivision of Bass Charrington like William Stones.

The only none Bass/Tetley/Whitbread/ Wards pubs I remember were The Pomona (Home Ales) which I think was Nottingham and the Britisk Oak (Shipstones) also Nottingham, Pig & Whistle Camerons) and the afore mentioned Pike & Heron (Mansfield). I think The Shepley Spitfire was also a Nottingham brewery

Hammonds was a Rotherham Brewery and had many Pubs in Rotherham.

They joined up with Hope & Anchor brewery of Sheffield, became Hammonds United brewery and then Charringtons of London. Aterwhich Bass, to be known as Bass Charrington. Today Im not sure who or what they are called

Also taking in Stones Brewery on the way

Hammond's wasn't Rotherham..it was Tadcaster..the brewery still exists , now owned by Coors. Just before my time but I do remember it my father said it always had a good reputation. Nearest one to us was The George at Parkgate .

Yes, 'Home Ales' (dreadful) .Another brewery that had only one pub in Sheffield, 'William Younger's' (Newcastle) that being the 'Claymore' (Arundel Gate), tho' the 'Cavendish Club' sold it and the were owned by the Bailey organisation who were from Tyneside anyway, A few other place you could get "Younger's' and 'Scottish and Newcastle Ales' were 'free houses', the 'Big Gun' (Wicker) and a place near Norton water tower (name I forget.) being two.

The 'Pike and Heron' is the only pub I recall (could be wrong) that 'Mansfield Brewery' had in Sheffield, although their beer was in a lot of W.M.Clubs and yes 'Shipstone's' of Nottingham, they had a few pubs in the Grimsby-Cleethorpes area. 'Higson's' of Liverpool who seemed to have only one pub here, the 'King's Arms' on Commercial Street. Seemed along way to deliver from Merseyside for one Sheffield pub !

My knowledge is really from the early 70's onwards...but of the Notts brewers, Mansfield had the Pomona on Eccleshall Road ,Home Ales had a couple , I remember one at Holmesfield but can't remember the name , and the Fiery Fred off Greenland Road was a new build in the 70's..ish . I can't remember Shipstones having any , but Hardy Hanson ( Kimberley Ales ) owned the Shepley Spitfire in the Dore area.

As to the Kings Arms on Commercial St. I doubt it was ever Higson's , another thread on here from 2013 saying it had the capital H in a circle which was Higson's logo is incorrect...that is Hammonds logo..Higsons was an oast house with a Liver bird on it.

As to Boddingtons , they never owned a pub in Sheffield..in fact they only ever owned one in Yorkshire..The Kinsley Hotel on the way to Pontefract .

Boddington's would have been seen widely in Sheffield in the 80's and 90's when having been taken over by Whitbreads it was promoted as a national brand and sold in their pubs.

Another one I remember was Cameron's Brewery from Hartlepool...they opened the new build Pig and Whistle in the 70's near the music shop at the very top of Fargate.

Yes the 'Fiery Fred' officially opened by the man himself-cricketer Freddie Trueman-. And Hardy and Hanson's another Nottingham (shire) brewing outfit who's tastes didn't appeal to me, even drinking in Nottingham ! As for 'Higson's' (Liverpool) I still maintain that they had the 'King's Arms' on Commercial Street. Also, the 'Fiery Fred' didn't seem to last long, built on a new housing estate between Coleridge Road and Greenland Road seemed to disappear quick.

Hi StPetre , I can't say whether it was or wasn't a Higson's pub as I assume it closed pre 1974...if it was still open after 74 I might have a better view . But this thread says

'' The Kings Arms was a Higsons pub, they were a Liverpool Brewery, its logo was a cut out barrel in the shape of an "H"

All I can say is that Logo was Hammonds...definitely not Higsons .

One can never say never...but I looked for Higson's in the mid 70's and the only one I could find outside the immediate Merseyside area was a pub in Fleetwood.

Out of all that you mention, believe there is on 'Bass' left and (from what I read) even their 'Bass Ale' while still brewed in Burton on Trent, but by ' Marston's'...sad I know !

Thank you and wasn't 'Bentley's' a Rotherham brewery ?

I believe it was.

I think it is just still possible to read the name painted on the roof of the Robin Hood pub in Aughton.

There used to be a brewery (perhaps 1950's) in Chesterfield, near Markham's.
