If you paid for the dogs food and vets bills they may keep him as their pet and share him with you when you can get to see him.  Dog share is great idea, I was looking for one before I got my pup a few years back. Had I known about http://www.borrowmydoggy.com, but then I wouldn't have the joy of having my own dog!  Happy to read he has a new home!
