Felix Baumgartner's Record & Sound barrier Breaking (23mile) high Jump.

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised not to see a thread existing about this, am I the only one in suspense waiting to see if the unbelievable record breaking jump from near space actually goes ahead today?

For those not in touch with what is going on, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner is to climb 23 miles (approx 4 times the height of commercial airliners) above earth into just about the endge of space, he will be strapped in to a capsule attached to a massive helium balloon. When he reaches his desired height he will press an ejector button and make a small rabbit leap out of his capsule to plummet down to earth again, the drop itself will take about 10 minute in toal from leaving the capsule to reaching the ground. Apparently he will reach speeds of up to 700mph on his way down and his special astronaut style suit will be the only thing protecting him, should it tear or fail for any reason he risks his blood boiling due to the pressure and temps up there.

A massive day for science and an unbelievable record attempt.

We are to find out shortly whether the jump will go ahead which is expected to be no earlier than 5:30pm UK time as the balloon takes 2 hours to inflate and then it takes quite a while for the balloon to reach the desired height so will be this evening before it goes ahead if it does.

He isn't a muslim and he's not doing the jump on a bicycle.

Why should we be interested:D

(For the record, I think he's crazy. Mind you, I'm not even keen on climbing a ladder)

Im really quite excited about it! Frustrating though that it was delayed till 2:30 and now till 5:30.

I know it's all a bit frustrating, if it doesn't get the all clear shortly then it won't go ahead until Thursday at the very earliest. They need they wind to drop about 3mph for it to go ahead. Exciting yet a bit nerving to say the least, talk about balls of steel!

Ive got a lot of child chauffeuring to do tonight, Ill be gutted if I miss it :(

You can watch it live on the Red Bull Stratos site live Nikki and that seems like the best place to watch it for us saddos as it has live date next to the stream as well so as soon as he leaves the ground it will tell you everything from how high he is to which direction he is heading as well as what speed he is going.

To be fair it will be live on the BBC News channel as well as all of the other News channels on Sky eg American ones ABC or whatever they are so might be worth watching it on there on a big screen.
