Hedgehogs will need a graduated release over a few weeks, they will have all the equipment they need provided I believe, a house to sleep in at night and a portable fenced run to stay in till you are happy they are eating and settling. The fence will then be removed and the house left down for them to sleep for a while if they wish it, they may stay put or they may wander, they can cover some ground so quiet rural areas are best. It takes a few weeks to release properly so you will have to gradually withdraw support from the animal ie enclosure then food then sleeping area till it is back totally living wild as it should, fending for itself. You must be able to stay emotionally detatched from the hog and give as little human handling or intervention as possible. Again for more informatuion call S Y A R, 01142349656, should have stated before, gardens in rural areas are best but each garden and area will be considered on its own merits and level of traffic. Thank you.

We offered to do this for SYAR a couple of years ago. We had to have a home check and our garden was not deemed suitable as there was not the scope for hedgehogs to wander between our garden and those next to ours as they apparently cover quite a wide area when they are hunting for a mate  Now bearing in mind our 'big boned' labrador has managed to get into the gardens on either side we were somewhat taken aback by this and left very disappointed. We had to chase for 'feedback' and were told that we could potentially 'house' them during the hibernation period and then never heard from them again.

Very disappointing when two genuine animal lovers were willing and more than able to help in whatever capacity we could.

Please note, the organisation has many animals and very few people, if you can not get through on the phone straight away or no one is available to speak to you straight away, please keep trying until some one can answer tnhe phone or until the person you need is available. For all offers of help please ring the number, 01142349656, explain who you are etc and the organisation will either take your details and send you a volunteer form, these have to be submitted to the committee, same as most places and some one will be in touch or they will advise you as is appropriate. Thank you.

Many thanks for your interest and support. Great to know that people will try and release them for us. It does take a few weeks to successfully release them, SYAR will explain all this to you and be there to help if you need it. Just be aware because they are endangered the policy on release location is very strict, not everyone will have an environment that will give the animal its best chance of survival and reasons can not always given. Only mentioning this because of an earlier post from someone who was not suitable, On the outside chance that the charity can not let you act as a release person don't take it personally, its just that they have to be ultra careful. Hope you can release for SYAR, let me know how you go on and once again a big thank you for the help.

Hi, I think my mum's garden has a good chance of being perfect. She has tried ringing a few times but not got through last I heard. Just wondering if they will need to send a form anyway if there is an email address she can send her details to instead?

Unfortunately I have a busy road next to my garden so can't help myself :(

Hope they all find happy homes :)

I rang them this afternoon and spoke to a lovely bloke. He is sending me out some literature and says that our garden sounds ideal. You have to make sure that you dont use slug pellets, if you have a pond you need to make sure that there is chicken wire/ramp so they can get out. You can't be considered if you have badgers in the area, foxes are okay apparantly . You have to pay a deposit to borrow a house and a run which you get when you return it. Sounds like fun, can't wait. Even my hubby thinks it is a good idea
