4x4s - your opinions

Recommended Posts

So a big and heavy Land Rover Discovery, launched in 1990 is beaten in a rather iffy TV crash test by an equally big and heavy Renault Espace launched in 2003?

It's not exactly conclusive ;)

I think you'd be equally better off in a modern Fiesta.

we've looked at the ncap results before. On average suv's have relatively poor safety performance, although the newest ones have improved to be nearly as good as a similarly priced saloon.

To be fair, road safety for occupants and pedestrians would be improved far more if old cars were taken off the road, regardless of type.

Persecuting 4x4's is missing the point a bit (or a lot). :)

probably true.

But safety should be a personal choice (your safety anyway). If someone chooses to run a classic mg midget that will fold up if hit by a bicycle then that's their choice.

Educating people as to what is actually more safe and what isn't though, that makes sense.

Maybe pedestrians should be fitted with safety features, as something like 85% of pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents are caused by the pedestrian.

pedestrains & cyclists who cause accidents should be prosecuted the same as drivers are.

breath tested, cycle MOT'd etc and then fined.

We have a 4x4 but in reality it is a 2 wheel drive with the ability to go 4 wheel drive if needed (which we hardly use). It's a Suzuki Vitara and is only 1.6 and uses only slightly more petrol than an escort.

The reason we have it is that we have 2 greyhounds, they fit nicely in the boot of the car and can get in and out easily. There's room for our child on the back seat. We looked at more conventional cars, but there just wasn't enough room for a child seat, pram and 2 dogs. Also I can't drive big cars, I feel out of control as the seats are so low and laid back and I just about peer over the steering wheel, with this car I sit up straight and I'm high and feel in control of the car.

I love our vitara, but I wouldn't get any other 4x4 as they guzzle loads of petrol and I hate the thought of all the enviornmental damage I'm doing as it is.

There was a delightful Stretch Hummer parked outside the Crucible this lunchtime. Imagine taking Tarquin and Tamara to ballet lessons in that. Plenty of room on the back seat for Giles, the Chinese Crested too. I believe the Ecclesall road set have already placed 4 orders.

Given a £50 fine and told to stay at home for 4 months ?

Now then folks,

I'd be interested to know (if anyone has any stats on this) what is average amount of energy required to make a new car?

i.e is it more efficient or environmentally friendly to buy a new car or to keep an older one running regardless of the difference in MPG.

Anyone know?
