Belinkabelle   10 #1 Posted December 7, 2010 We need to get over to see family in Crewe, Cheshire some time before Christmas.  We usually go via Buxton and Congleton as it's the shortest route but I'm a bit concerned about whether the roads are okay given the recent snow and ice.  I know the other option is to go via the M62 and down the M60 and M6 but that doubles the distance.  Anyone done the Buxton/Congleton or a similar route since the bad weather? alchresearch   215 #2 Posted December 7, 2010 Not done the cross Peaks runs but all is fine over here. Sunny with blue skies, but very cold and icy.
 Share this content via...
Belinkabelle   10 #3 Posted December 7, 2010 Not done the cross Peaks runs but all is fine over here. Sunny with blue skies, but very cold and icy.  Thanks, good to know for when/if we make it over there!  Might be postponing Christmas if more snow comes
 Share this content via...
vaughanb   10 #4 Posted December 7, 2010 I work in New Mills (on the very edge of High Peak/Cheshire) and the route over here is ok. It's a bit dodgy in a couple of places but most of the route is clear. I work with a guy that lives in Crewe and his journey to work is all clear now, he's started coming on the back roads instead of sticking to the main routes it's cleared that much now. I think you'd be ok, unless the weather takes a turn for the worse.  The Cat and Fiddle was closed last time I checked so I don't think you'd be able to go the easy way to Congleton. I've got to go from Sheffield to Macclesfield next week and not looking forward to it, not sure which way to go...  regards Vaughan
 Share this content via...
Strix   11 #5 Posted December 7, 2010 we travel to the wirral fairly regularly. buxton is something of a snow trap  the m62 for us is a little longer, but the same in time, and is usually the last route to close in bad weather, so if there's a risk of snow we prefer that route
 Share this content via...
Classic Rock   10 #6 Posted December 7, 2010 I've been over to Runcorn today via Woodhead and then M60/M56. The roads are clear and fine. It's just like here, the side roads are still very snowy. iI'm pretty sure the road to Crewe should be fine as it's a major route, lorries use it.  That's today, if we have more snow then it'll be different. nickp   10 #8 Posted December 7, 2010 I did Tideswell / Buxton / Cat and Fiddle / Congleton on Sunday. Was fine although I did see a Freelander embedded in a wall. All roads seem to have been cleared and gritted well.
 Share this content via...
