The Sheffield gay scene part 2

Recommended Posts

Also heard this and been added as a friend on facebook from "fuel Sheffield"

time will tell!

The plot thickens! Their page is now saying they are nothing to do with Fuel Hull. It claimes they are from London.

Though they are using both the Hull name and logo on their Facebook page, very odd. It would seem the only similarity is the location.

I had spoken to DTZ about a year ago regarding part of the same building (The Old Gossips) and they though they are the 'Agent' seemed very unwilling to have viewings etc, and were unable to provide rent or contract details. They did say there was also considerable of internal damage to the building from water leaks etc when 'Limit' opened for a short time in the upstairs part (Old Isabellas) and that any lease would be subject to the lessee fixing it. I believe there is something going on with the buildings owner and some type of incentive the building offers them to have it unoccupied.

Also since Fuel closed of course Jurys Inn has opened, and only recently the application for Crasher just 100 yards away was refused.

I suppose we will just have to wait and see!

Really interesting, Jamesogt, about Fuel reopening; I've just been told about it by someone really senior, in connection with, ahem, a career opportunity.

I give it a week then.

There used to be a bi group that was non scene and run from Collegiate Crescent, about a mile out of the city. It was run by NHS Sexual health service - don't know if it is still running try giving them a ring on 0114 226 1900

Good luck

The group now have an email list that keeps people up to date with social events etc - join at: http://www.bi-weekly.org.uk/

Not trying to be difficult here but the event is called 'Sheffield Pride' where does it say you have to be 'Gay' to be proud of our city? Our city has people of all races, religions, and sexual orientation, some of them just might even be proud of our city.

If anyone were to suggest that only LGBT people were allowed to attend, that would be illegal and discriminatory. But no one has, have they.

Just because it is (probably) organised by and for LGBT people primarialy dosen't make it exclusively a Gay event and nor should it be. They are a part of our community Gays contribute much more than some people realise to art music and culture among others and are rarely guilty of discriminating against non LGBT people so why do we discriminate against them, is it fear?

If so fear of what? ... perhaps, ... no! ... it couldnt be. Could it...?

Anyone can go and enjoy a pleasant safe day out in a park with friendly creative people.

Oh and lets keep politics out, it is meant to be a party not a battle ground for the PC brigade.

There is no such thing as 'PC'. However, politics (of the non-party kind) are at the heart of Pride events. While I agree with a lot of what you say about the inclusiveness of Pride, the whole point of Sheffield Pride is very much about LGBT people - and the reason for a Pride event still being needed is as you know because LGBT people are still not allowed to live with the same respect and equality as heterosexuals. It is not discriminatory or exclusive to have specific events like this - that presumes that equal rights already exists for people of all sexualities, when they don't.

As for the point made earlier about sub-groups splitting off, isn't that a sign of confidence, that rather than just club together under the LGBT umbrella, we can feel safe to socialise with people who are more close to our individual interests?

The real villain is too-cheap pricing of alcohol in supermarkets. It's KILLING Gay Bars and Clubs just as it is killing your own local mainstream pub on the corner in town or village green. I think the Government's feeblest attempt at a 'Minimum alcohol price' in the supermarkets is nothing short of a DISGUSTING insult to all those hard-working pub and club managers across the land who work so hard to provide us with the enjoyable social atmosphere that so many of us need.

I feel so strongly about this that I will stand as an independent candidate in the next General Election, with the need to raise the minimum price of shop-bought cheap cider/lager by AT LEAST 100%.

Since my post was removed I shall try again, I guess YOU are the one who complained and had it removed. If you are going to post you should let people reply to it, if not then dont bother posting.

Supermarkets are not killing the pubs/clubs, its the price of the beer in the pubs that are, prices seem to be rocketing up lately.

If you stood as a independent candidate you wont get many votes (apart from 1), 100% - what planet are you on.

Well, Aaron, would YOU rather all Gay Clubs and bars closing down and you having to resort to buying cheap booze from supermarkets for a house party in your flat with neighbours threatening you due to the noise, 'cos that's the only alternative left?

Really interesting, Jamesogt, about Fuel reopening; I've just been told about it by someone really senior, in connection with, ahem, a career opportunity.

I'd rather you get a grip.

Supermarkets so what they do to make money. If pubs and clubs didn't want to close, then they would adjust their prices.

That simple.

Indeed, the mystery does deepen. I just found out from Fuel Management when I messaged them, that the people who are planning to reopen the club are not, in fact connected with them, and Fuel are not too happy about them using their logo; still, they seem to be interested in me, but I would dearly love to know who they are!

A few months back I actually asked Fuel if they might consider coming back to Sheffield, as their old premises had never been taken over by any other club, and there were one or two clubs up for lease in West Street, both of which, BTW are now re-occupied.

However, its very brave to imagine that customers will be exactly rushing out to all these nightclubs in the teeth of a recession.

Just had another look at the 'Fuel Sheffield' Facebook page and its been renamed 'Limit Sheffield' and the fuel logo has been taken down. At least they appear to be honest about it, but there is still a mystery as to who will be running it, if Fuel Management aren't. I mailed Fuel Management the other day and they said it is nothing to do with them!

I dont think its true that customers wont be rushing out. When Affinity first opened on Campo Lane, for months it was very busy, and I think we were all optimistic at first, and that was late 2007 and early 2008, when things first started getting quite difficult.

What places find hard is to maintain momentum and keep people's interests. Dempseys does not have a magic formula, but it has kept a steady trade, but they keep it simple and in the face of no competition it works. As the numbers of people who turned up to the launch of Out of Office proved, there is still a hunger for something different out there.

I think location will always hamper things, here in Sheffield. What would possibly be successful would be a pub/bar that could offer a lead in to Dempseys. What wont be successful is a gay pub on West St, which would be a real clash of cultures, which Tyranna seemed to suggest to former Fuel Management.

FYI, I just found out the following:

Just today, I have heard that it appears that two seperate parties are actually in discussion with the landlords concerning the two club premises in the building.

First of all I was told that someone is looking at the upstairs (former Niche) club and is still assessing it as a possible venue, but no contracts have been signed as yet, as they are assessing the viability of reopening the venue.

Regarding the ground floor club, the one which actually was the Fuel premises, I heard that someone else 'had been making enquiries' about this, but no details were forthcoming as to who this was, or indeed who is looking at the upstairs club.

However, it seems almost certain that the people interested in upstairs and downstairs clubs are seperate parties, not part of the same club organisation. ;)

I don't see the point of trying to reopen a club that failed, what is needed is something new, in better suroundings (that area where fuel was is a dump), with a modern feel to it (not another 80's throwback club complete with glitterball and drag act) and reasonable prices.
