Anyone use/used Highfield vets

Recommended Posts

ah maybe so. I'd not used the vet for some years, so i wouldn't know if it was a regular vet or not. However, the nurse told me that the only way to stop the vet behaving like that was to put it in writing so i kinda guessed they'd had complaints before. I only used them cos i was told that was the nearest one to me that would accept neutering vouchers. Turns out vets 4 pets accept them anyway so i could have took him there. Needless to say, the cat went to Vets 4 Pets and they also took the dogs stitches out.

Try Peak Vets, Olivet Road , Woodseats.

My dog was having eye problems about 3 years ago. Our then current vet recommended them to us , as they had some specialist equipment.

We stuck with them as we are not only impressed by the vets, but also the rest of the staff there.

Funnily enough I have taken my 2 cats Zaghe and Sumo there this morning - Zaghe to be spayed (bless her!) and Sumo to have his nails clipped. I find them absolutely fantastic and everytime I have been the staff and other customers have been very friendly. I would highly reccomend them!! Sumo is a very timid cat and doesn't like to be handled much - and even though he was snarling and attacking the nurse clipping his claws (He managed to scratch and bite her - I apologised profusley), she didn't mind one bit, she just carried on. I felt so sorry for her. She was still really friendly and smiley and still managed to give him a huggle when she had done!! What a great person - not many people would have been friendly towards a cat that had just attacked them.

But really- they are fantastic!!

I took my dog there to be castrated, the vet was horrible to him. He called him a wimp when he yelped as they injected him into his spine, rather than the scruff as i've seen them do before, and was generally quite rude. They left his lead in his cage with him so when i collected him he'd chewed it to bits. I took him to another vets to have his stitches out, and cancelled my booking for the cat to be spayed there. We used them all the time for our cat when i was a kid, but I'd never ever go back there again.

I've been taking Gadget there for about 4yrs and I am very happy with them. They seem very cheap compared to my parent's vet (well, technically parents' dog's vet obviously! :hihi:) but they are down South so I wouldn't be able to compare with another Sheffield vet.

The receptionists are especially friendly and caring and really love animals which is nice.

I think I know who that was - the grumpy man vet! He's a bit abrupt. I much prefer the lady vets there - they are both so much friendlier.

The man was similar with Gadget to what you described... One week Gadget had a V. bad cut on his paw that needed stitches, but he seemed totally oblivious and the vet said "he must have a very high pain threshold"... the next week the vet was a bit rough taking the stitches out (not very rough though, I've experienced much worse at another vet years ago) Gadget yelped and the vet said "he must be a bit of a wimp!" - when he himself had said the opposite the week before! :loopy:

I ask for either of the ladies now because Gadget prefers them ;)

Someone just bought this thread to my attention. I am the new owner of Highfield veterinary centre having bought the practice last July. I am the only "man vet" who now works at Highfield vets and I would like to assure everyone that I am not at all grumpy - at least no one has ever described me as such to my knowledge! I don't know if the grumpy vet in question was one of the old partners or a locum but either way he no longer works at Highfield Veterinary Centre. I'm pleased that my female colleagues and the reception team and nurses have been found to be friendly. Hopefully if you see me you will find me to be equally friendly :) Michael Squires

"I have used Highfield vets for over twenty years (they were my family vet as a child). I have had some bad experiences with them and some good ones. I have found that they are very closed off to anything outside of the medical realm e.g. discussions of the raw food diet but for the straight forward things they're brilliant. I really like the small, friendliness of the practise as well, and the fact that they are walking distance from my house.

I will go to Peak for anything more complex though... "

As the new owner of Highfield vets (as of last July) I am pleased that you have had good experiences there and hope that you will continue to do so. I would just like to say that I would like to think we can handle "more complex" cases very well at Highfields. I spent most of my career working for the PDSA which has given me a wealth of medical and surgical experience, and the practice facilities are undergoing modernisation all the time - for example we recently installed a brand new operating theatre. So please give us a try and hopefully we will show you that we will deal with teh complex just as well as the straight forward! (And I am more than open to discussing the pros and cons of a raw food diet!) Michael Squires

Good luck in your new position Michael. I bring my dog to Highfield, and also had similar experiences with the man who others have spoken about on this thread. It hasn't put me off though. Excellent service apart from the odd (now departed) grump!

Hello :)

The anecdote I mentioned was a good few years ago so I think it was the person bogwoppit mentioned. Even so, he wasn't that grumpy anyway! Just a bit more 'stern' in personality in comparison to Manuella for example (I can tell she is Gadget's favourite - he is perfectly happy to let her do anything to him! I think he likes the tone of her voice)

It certainly never put me off Highfield Vets as I've always been very pleased with them :)

Thanks KatieB

Manuela went on maternity leave just after I started but I soon realised that she has a very loyal following! Let Gadget know that Manuela should be back sometime this summer! :)

Cool - I'll have a word with Gadget and remind him not to tread on any more glass until summer ;):hihi:

PS. The other lady that we've had recently is absolutely lovely too... just doesn't have as memorable a name so that's probably why everyone remembers Manuella so much!
