Ive said this before my brother nearly joined the army but under circumstances pulled out after the 6 wks training so I understand the fury of what Phillip did, I also have been attending remembrance day ever since I was a child and have great respect for the men who died/dying for us. However I seriously doubt phillip did this deliberatly I think it was a drunken mistake which he regrets not because he has been forced to abandon his studies but because of the mistake he did. How many of us on here have done something wild and stupid while 'intoxicated' then regretted it the next day? stone me if you want but I wish this young man the best for the future and hope he lowers his pop intake! And my heart goes out to the war veterans for the disrespect that they have felt xxx

It's probably best he hasn't stayed in Sheffield. It would only be a matter of time before someone got hold of him and gave him a kicking.

Total overreaction by many. He has been punished for what he done and then some.

Best for all concerned if he can now just get on with his life somewhere else.

PHILIP Laing - the student who caused national outrage when he was photographed urinating on Sheffield's Barker's Pool war memorial - has quit his studies at Sheffield Hallam University.

The 19-year-old had been expected to face disciplinary proceedings from the university authorities for bringing its reputation into disrepute.

But in a statement a Hallam spokeswoman said Laing, who comes from Macclesfield, had decided following discussions to withdraw from his sports technology course, which he began in September.

"We now consider this matter closed," she added

Moral of the Story is don't drink more than you can Handle and these situations are Unlikely to occur! and don't Bow Down to 'Peer Pressure' or what a load of idiotic marketing people 'promote' who are only interested in getting people's money not the concequences of what will happen if people abuse the drug they are selling!

There will always be those who actively enjoy being outraged.

Perfectly illustrated by the following statement:

Too hell with rubbish, people died for that memorial, may he rot in hell for what he did. We should be so proud of what our guys did to help us now. He's scum scum scum.

People didn't die for that memorial, the memorial is for people who have died.

Why isn't this story chip paper by now? I'm bored of it. What's the next thread about it going to be, " Sheffield crowd marches on Macclesfield to lynch Phillip Laing. "

Get over it, move on.

What this guy did was wrong but I feel that he was demonised to such an extent that due to the incident being highly publicised he is marked for life. He has left the university but do you really think that any other university will accept him? All this has done is it has stopped this man from getting a higher education and making something of his life. Since this incident i'm sure I've read that two more people in different citys have done the same thing yet they did'nt get as much publicity as this guy. He got his punishment in court so having to leave university to me is like getting punished again for the same crime, never mind the paranoid feeling he must get everytime he's out in public. Yes the public have a right to feel outraged but it does'nt mean a persons life chances should be limited just to satisfy the publics demand for so called justice.

Exactly.

This whole episode has been more about a convenient, socially-acceptable target for dribbling, foaming morons with far more repressed anger than is healthy, than anything related to the actual act commited.

If fact, I don't think even the original tabloid bogeyman, the peadofile gets as much vitriol as this geezer did.

The only good thing is that by the time next term starts, the foamers will have been through another load of topics and will have forgotton that Mr Laing ever existed.

Does it make him more scummy if you say it more?

Do you have a similar opinion on all the drunken assualts that have occured in Sheffield since, where people have been hurt?
