hcotterill   10 #1 Posted August 31, 2008 Hi, does anyone have any tips on setting up a website which isnt one of the free server ones (ie freewebs). I have a freewebs site which deals with my art and photography etc combined but need to sort out proper domain name site for the photography side alone. I have no idea with the codes etc they use on them and dont want to spend pots of cash just getting it made. Ive only ever done a freewebs site where its simple and easy, so making a proper site is going to be a task you could say!  Thanks Helen
 Share this content via...
Donny B Good   10 #2 Posted August 31, 2008 Hi Helen, Looks as though you are at exactly the same stage that I'm at, currently building a website for my photography work. There are a couple of ways to do it, the easiest is via something like http://www.clikpic.com/ which is cheap for a basic small website but gets more pricey as the content increases (see the site for details). My son Dave has built the basis of his website using this and it's very easy to do, see http://www.cameraflyer.co.uk. The way I'm doing it is cheaper, (assuming you have Photoshop), you just buy a domain name (Very cheap) and have it hosted by someone like http://www.plugsocket.com/ I got mine a couple of years ago, it's only about £5 a year plus £24.99 for hosting a basic 100mb website, more if you want all the bells and whistles. Mine will be on line soon, still building the galleries at present. Hope this helps eamil me if you want do discuss. Cheers Don
 Share this content via...
Hook   10 #3 Posted August 31, 2008 I run the gallery for competition here, and it's fairly simple to do.  I have a domain from http://www.123-reg.co.uk. I have hosting from http://www.asmallorange.com I downloaded gallery from http://gallery.menal.to  I installed gallery to the webspace and allow users to upload their photos. It costs me £5 a month (mates rates... but they do pretty cheap packages), and £2.49 a year for the domain. I need a lot more than 100mb because the average photo uploaded to the gallery is just under 2mb, then gallery resizes it and keeps the new and old files. You don't have to do it that way.  You don't need photoshop this way, saving you £3/400  That all said and done, I have a pro account at flickr for my photos. ImpInaBox   10 #4 Posted September 1, 2008 [blatant plug...] I've done a few websites for photographers (with my Abbeydale Associates hat on), ranging from very simple 2/3 pages to large professional sites and would be happy build something small to your design ideas for a very reasonable cost - can be as low as £99 - including a uk domain name. In fact I've just finished one at www.lemonsnap.co.uk. Starting from something along those lines, with just a little web knowledge (which you seem to have), you can add to it as and when. I can also create Photoshop web galleries tailored to your design, or custom scripted slide show galleries like these, if needed. Webbo   10 #5 Posted September 1, 2008 The most simple way to showcase your photography if you host your images with a flickr account is, purchase a domain name, basic hosting and install some small software called Satellite, and what this software does is links to your flickr account and displays all your sets etc.  The software can be fully customised with a bit of CSS tweaking. mattsando   10 #6 Posted September 10, 2008 I designed my own and a friend of mine hosts it, for free, via his company http://www.phphosts.co.uk - he offers a free hosting package, so all you'd need to buy is a domain name - which is just a few quid. He also does design, and is currently building a site for another mate of mine for his business.
 Share this content via...
