Remember any old silly verses etc you were told as a child
SheilaH replied to Joto's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
This one was often recited during school dinners in the early sixties! Dessert tended to involve a lot of custard (sometimes all I ate because I didn't like fruit tarts). Hairy hairy custard Half a bowl of sick ??????? ??????? All stirred up in a dead dog's eye Can anyone fill in the missing line or lines please? I'm sure The Beatles must have based some of I Am The Walrus on this rhyme! Probably a Liverpool variation. -
Hurlfield/Grange grammar school for girls
SheilaH replied to jappi's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I have a framed photo of the Grange from the late sixties as I recognise the classic cars of Mr Jones (English) and an older, male teacher parked outside the front entrance. That would make it after the merger with the Abbeydales. I was there from 1966-1973. -
Chelsea Girl was in King St - I worked there as a Saturday girl in about 1971.

To Jack Reacher: You're not thinking of Pippy's on Cambridge St are you? They started in the sixties with hippy clothes and I think finally gave up the ghost in the late eighties after getting into punk.

My Gram Hewitt lived opposite the pub at the end of Powell St, which I think must have been the Bathfield. Avril and Raymond Hewitt are my cousins and both emigrated to Australia after their marriages in the early sixties. My dad was George Hewitt. I used to play with Janet Digman when visiting my Gram's and I went on the pub trips to the seaside a couple of times. How I hated having to sit in the "children's" coach! I think Janet kept me company on thos occasions too. My Uncle Alan & Aunty Mary Hewitt also lived in a yard on Powell St until they moved to Gleadless.

I remember going there in the seventies (I left Sheffield in 1975) and I thought it tended to have 'arty' films. I think I went there to see a French film with friends from college once.

I think you mean Roger McGough of the Scaffold. I saw them perform several times there during the late sixties. The first time I ever went to the theatre (not counting pantos) was to see the Stirrings in '68 and it was a road to Damascus for me, as I have loved the theatre ever since.
