  4. There was also a little shop in Rawson Street in the living room.I think the name was Taylor. This was another shop that would let you have your sweet allowance in advance during rationing.
  5. I remeber two fruit and veg Hawkers that came round the ABC streets. One was Pete Salvin and The other Freddie Hicks. In the early 1950's a family moved into Brough Street called Warburton.I think I remember him being a hawer he had a daughter called Mavis. and a son called tommy.not sure wether the had another child. They had a cocker spaniel that came and sat on our front step and would sing when I played the piano.
  6. Hi Popt. The pawnbroker at the bottom of Bamforth Street was poppy Hallams and there was always a full shop on monday mornings in the 1940's.the men would redeem ther suits on friday or saturday morning and pledge them again on the monday, after wearing them over the weekend. One of the local characters from Cottam Street would take the 'bundles' for the neibours and when it came to her turn she was asked ''how much do you want for them Cathy'' she would reply ''2/6 Mr Hallam'' and he would say ''sorry I can't lend you that Cathy'' and she would reply ''half crown will do Mr Hallam'' I spent many a Hour in there myself, and even though i was only 11 and 12 I felt realy embarrased and would wait till no one was about and nip in the side door.Kids today don't know there born.
