  1. Thank you for starting this thread which I have just come across. My husband has recently started with prostate problems and is having a very bad time. He has been to the doctor and was given tablets for an enlarged prostate but they will take a couple of months to work through his system. In the meantime he is up and down to the toilet trying to pass water and sometimes it is taking a couple of hours during the day. Afterwards he gets a pain in his anal region. At night he was going to the toilet a few times and without problems but for the past few nights he has had difficulty passing water before going to sleep. It is a real tormenting situation to be in at the moment and I wonder how other people cope with the pain.
  2. Yes he was a full tax paying uk citizen before he moved to Canada. Now he is trying to get back into a HGV driving job for which he has had to pay to change his licence back to a UK driving licence and also had to pay for a medical examination - no help from JSA of course.
  3. My brother in law came back from Canada in February after spending 3 years living and working there. His marriage had broken up and he was so upset that he didn't tell the Canadian authorities he was coming back to England to live. He is now classed as having to prove his habitual residence - that means he has to have lived here for 183 days until he can get any JSA or any benefits. Due to the work situation he hasn't been able to get any work up to now either. He is having to live on the handouts from his family and his brother has put him up in a spare bedroom.
  4. Peter Robinson was a school teacher and Methodist minister and has now passed away two years ago.
  5. My father died recently in December 2008 and I had to deal with his affairs, one was filling in the tax form for any refunds. He has always paid his taxes. I got a letter back in early May 2009 saying there was a refund due and it would be paid into my bank account shortly. I still haven't received it and it is over a month ago. I tried to ring the HMRC a few times and was told the line was busy. When I did manage to get through I was told the money would be paid into my account in a few days time. Then I was told the system was down. I feel very frustated by the system. They are quick to take your money and so slow to pay it back. It makes me feel I have been lied to and I will not get the money. Has anyone else had this problem?
  6. Has anybody tried to sell their house through one of the quick sale adverts? The ones who advertise to buy your house where you don't need a HIP and they will pay your legal fees and you don't need to pay estate agent fees. If so did they have any problems?
  7. Does anybody remember a man called Jimmy McTee. I met him when working on Shepcot Lane during the shutdown fortnight when the furnaces needed rebuilding. Jimmy was the clayman who mixed the clay for the bricklayers to lay the bricks for the furnaces when they rebuilt them and I believe he lived on the Wybourn estate. It must have been about 30 years ago when I worked with him. He was a raeal Sheffield character who liked a good drink.
  8. Does anybody know where Jack Walker is? He was quite a character who lived in the Ecclesfield area and I worked with him in the building trade about 1967. He once went into a pub with me and ate a big doorstep of a sandwich he had made for his dinner.
  9. Has anybody got any information about Ernest Burlin who used to work for Yorkshire Water in the 70s. I haven't seen him for a few years. He used to go in the Magnet pub and the Forty Foot some years ago.
  10. Does anyone remember Ted Clay who worked at the waterworks at Edmund Road as a plumber. I think he lived at Woodhouse at the time and then he moved to Moonshine Lane depot as a foreman plumber.
  11. Does anybody remember a man called Jack Platts who had a stall in the market and in the 70s he used to go in the Rotherham House as it was called then. He was a smart man with grey hair and a moustache and was known by a lot of people.
  12. my wife Susan worked in the office there in 1969 and was there for about 8 months until she had a baby. She worked with Patricia Odale, Kathy and Sheila (can't remeber her surname) and there was Kath, Peggy, Joyce.
  13. I have still got a blue serge suit that was made in 1972 and it is still immaculate. I have also got a Reid and Taylor suit that was made by Isador Newman in 1975 for £100 which is still like a new one.
  14. Is there anyone alive who used to work at Friedrichs in the Wicker. I worked there in 1960 til about 1962 and I worked in the factory there with Graham Brunt from Ecclesfield, Ian Armitage and his father, Les Ridge who worked in the bakehouse, big Sid, Ernest Furness are the names I remember.
  15. My brother is just having his place at Stannington done by Connaughts as well and they have been useless. This is the 6th week and he couldn't sleep in his own bed for most of the time. The floorboards in his bedroom were taken up and left and he did not know when they were coming back to put them down so he had to sleep on the settee. They left a mess when they came in and out of his home and the waste pipe from the bath wasn't fitted properly so the water drained out onto the floor. What a mess.
  16. Does anyone know Eileen Clarke who used to live on Hurlfield Drive with her husband Jeff and son Jason? The last I heard was she was possibly living at Hillsborough. I would like to know what happened to her as I have lost contact with her and her family over the years.
  17. didn't he live on Berners Road at one bit? He would be 57 now.
  18. When I was a young lad I worked at Freiderichs in the Wicker and I remember seeing a man who worked on the coal lorries and he was always black with the coal. He had his mouth open all the time looking up in the air. He wore wellingtons summer and winter. When he finished on the coal he used to walk his dog which was on a long rope. The rope was that long that the dog would be at the picture house and he would be at Freiderichs. Does anyone remember him?
  19. Has anyone dealt with T&C Solutions? I want some decking putting down and I wondered if their work was good.
  20. Does anybody remember a bloke called Frank Barratt who used to go round the Wicker in the sixties with a big suitcase full of bric a brac. He used to sell all sorts of stuff including razor blades etc in the pubs. He was an ex-boxer I believe. Does anybody know what year he died?
