  1. I remember London trip in 1962 I think from Heeley Bank Junior School. Tower of London, boat trip on the Thames and London Zoo.
  2. Hi, Wendy Hall is my cousin. Her Dad was landlord at the Miners Arms in Eyam before moving to the Park Hotel in Rotherham. They then became landlords at a number of pubs in Somerset. Wendy is married and lives in Gloucestershire.
  3. Hi or-b-son, Interesting to read your responses to my cousin's request for information/memories of the Wait family who lived on Shoreham Street. It seems I have two cousins I have never met. My mother Nellie was Doug's sister and they all lived for a time at Shoreham Street. I'm not sure when Doug got married, their children were born or when they were divorced. My Mum and Dad were married in 1947 and I was born in 1951 so I guess I was too young to understand what was happening and by the time I was, it was all water under the bridge by then. Your post didn't come as a complete surprise though because somewhere in the back of my mind the mention of the two children rang a bell, so someone must have said something but I can't remember what! Doug was a colourful character - always working on some harebrained scheme or other which never seemed to come off - but he was always good to me. He would come to our house every other day for a month and then would disappear for 18 months and then re-appear as if nothing had happened. This was a pattern he repeated so often throughout his life it became a norm. He lived at Shoreham Street when I was young and then for some years in Redcar where he worked as a pipe fitter I think on the oil rigs and also, I believe, for ICI. He was injured in an industrial accident whilst up there and never worked again. In the early 80's he lived in Bournemouth for a while and then moved back to Sheffield where he lived fairly close to me (when I lived in Oughtibridge) for two or three years before moving to Arbourthorne. My Dad died in 1989 and my Mum in 1993 and Doug died sometime between them although I can't remember the exact year. My lasting memory of Doug would be a guy who never took life too seriously, always had some scheme going on but always had a smile on his face. That was his public face anyway - I suspect he led a lonely life for quite a while. It would be good if you could fill in some of the blanks regarding Doug's married life, his wife and children and their lives if possible but don't worry if you feel this is inappropriate.
  4. Spartans - Black & White Quarters Franks - Red & Black Quarters Saxons - Yellow & Green Quarters I was in Spartans with my old friend Tim Jackson( anyone no what happened to Tim?) - 1962-68 . We were also in the same Ten Pin bowling team (Bowling Stones) on Saturday mornings at Universal on Queens Road.
  5. Does anyone remember the Ladies Hairdressers in Greenhill Village in the late 60's/early 70's ? I'm sure it used to be on the main street.
  6. I remember Albert too, especially the brief time he was works manager. My old mate Bill Evans was the accountant there at the time - must have been early 80's. This was just before it all closed down.
  7. Hi Meltman - I think I remember someone called Green (can't remember his Christian name) who was works manager. He had a secretary called Audrey Mycock.
  8. I am Andrew Staniland. Used to live in Heeley and then Oughtibridge.
  9. I worked in the Cost Office from 1968 with Denis Gent, Ann Wilkes, Winnie Bainbridge, Bill Evans, Diane Beevers, Roy Jukes, Doreen Housman and Peggy Longmore. Worked in the Wicker until 1975 and then moved to opposite where Meadowhall is now on Sheffield Road when we became Edgar Allen Balfour. After that we became Edgar Allen Mining Products and I left to go to London and Scandinaian when the Dengles and Standall tools took over. Would be nice to know where any of the above are now.
  10. They used to open on Friday/Saturday nights about 11.00pm. Used to go to the disco at the Marquis of Granby first then on to the Rising Sun pool.
  11. I remember a girl called Twizzle. Did you go to the University on Saturday nights too?
  12. Yes I went late 60's. I'm sure it was twice a week Sundays and Wednesdays. Good times and half way through the night down to the Wagon & Horses for a spot of under age drinking.
  13. Went there 1956 to 1961. I can still remember my class mates although I no longer see any of them. Michael Bradley, Robert Cocker, Roy Dickens, Barry Fletcher, Michael Hague, Andrew Ibbotson, Peter Latham, Richard Mason, John Ring, Andrew Sandham, Andrew Staniland, Paul Webster, Roger Welch, Brian Woolhouse. Girls were Susan Binney, Janet Brown, Elizabeth Clayton, Ann Connell, Gillian Grafton, Avril Hollis, Hilary Oates, Carol Parish, Linda Parkin, Marie Pitfield, Susan Thorpe, Lynne Travis, Joan Westran. Sorry for any I've missed! Teachers I remember - Mrs Jones, Miss Benn, Miss Wing, Mr Elks. Mr Guest, Mr Sowerby and the head was Mr Woods. Anyone remember? Happy days!
  14. Lived in Moffatt Road from 1958 to 1978 and my parents lived there until 1991. Before that lived in a prefab on Warburton Gardens. I know we all look at the past with rose tinted specs but I can honestly say they were great times to be a kid. You were never frightened, you could play on the street or go to the woods, stay out all day as long as you were back for tea. Two channels on the TV, no mobile phones, no facebook or twitter, no computers. Just bat and ball, basic toys, books and your own imagination. Went through the area the other day and a lot has changed but there are still some places that bring back memories - Heeley bank School, Midhill Road (remember the Co-Op?), City Surveyors, Ball Inn etc. Got me thinking of places no longer there. Horses Field (Black Banks), Taggy's, Wilkinsons Builders yard, Little Sisters of the Poor convent, shops opposite Heeley Church. Does anyone remember the shops on Anns Road? I can remember Marsdens on the corner of Myrtle Road (there was a telephone box there too where people queued to make calls), Betty's was on the opposite corner. Then moving along the was a Bakery, a Butchers (can't remember the name), Beats greengrocers and Woolhouses newsagent all on the corner with Alexander Road. There were others too at the corner with Richards Road and an Off Licence at he corner of Spencer Road. I'm pretty sure there was a barbers somewhere as well. I also remember - or at least I think I do - that there used to be a house at the bottom of Myrtle Road/Prospect Road by the side of the rail tracks almost under Havelock Bridge. Can anyone confirm?
