  1. Yes that would fit, my family left Sheffield in 1965, thanks.
  2. Does anyone recall a small model shop, also sold photographic equipment, I think it was around the Church St, Pinfold St, Leopold Street, junction. I used to visit frequently with a school friend from Abbeydale Boys Grammar, Mike King. Thanks
  3. Thank you for that explanation, I wonder how many parents knew that at the time?
  4. I passed it in 1959 (hot summer) and went to the new Abbeydale Grammar for Boys, but thinking back it seems sad that out of a class of 41 at Pomona Street Primary only three of us passed and had that opportunity to do O and A levels. I remember the three were myself, Ian Wileman and a girl I think was called Vicky or Victoria. David Winter
  5. Would that geography teacher have been Claud Raines (might be spelt differently to the famous actor). I always felt sorry for him but he just could not control a class. The Head used to patrol when he was teaching to make sure chaos didn't ensue. Richard Wiseman did indeed form the Crich Tramway Museum. He was also one of the teachers who would take us railway nuts on 'shed bashes' i.e. loco spotting. There is film of him somewhere, and on his honeymoon he took his new wife on a tour of the Glasgow tram system! John Mann was another, he was my form master in 1C in 1959. He passed away a few years ago. Was Mr Ramsbottom also a PE teacher? Dave Winter
  6. Thanks for your great responses, I wonder if the Education Authority chartered complete trains from BR. I remember on my London trip being disappointed as we had been told we would have a ride on the Northern Line under the Thames, but we ran out of time! Even back then I was a complete train nut, and on the way back to Sheffield photographed a Metropolitan Railway electric loco No.13 Dick Whittington as our train overtook it 🙂. Happy carefree days.
  7. Hi, I attended Pomona Street Primary School from 1957 to 1959. In 1958 we had a school trip to Whipsnade Zoo by train from Victoria, then coach for the last leg. The following year (my final year) we ventured to London, again by train from Victoria this time all the way to Marylebone down the old Great Central, which must have taken over three hours each way. I just wondered if this was a common occurrence with Sheffield primary schools or just something Pomona Street had organised. All Best David Winter
  8. How do folk feel about possible electric Meridians rather than a new train? At least they wouldn't vibrate so much with electric traction. I prefer a HST anyday but then I'm old fashioned! Dave
