  1. I don't know why people mess about "trying" things they've read on owners forums, on the chance (however likely) that it cures it. There are reputable garages that will run a diagnostic scan on your vehicle for as little as £20- £30 these days!

Ive saved my self a fortune and lots of time by using forums, if you've got a problem with a car you can bet some one else has had it too.

Even if a garage runs a diagnostic test some times it only points to what could be the problem, and some times problems don't show on a diagnostics test.

If a garage hasn't come across the problem before and a diagnostics test doesn't show what it is then they are left to try things until they find the fault.

I'd personally spend the money on parts and take advice from a forum than spend the money paying some one else to guess.

  2. I've got a Nissan Primera, had the same problem a few months ago, engine was turning over, trying to start but wouldn't. AA man couldn't say for sure what it was but suspected a sensor, had a read of a forum and went for the crankshaft sensor, about £75 from Nissan, fitted it my self. That fixed the fault.

  3. If you are booking a train ticket, work out where it is at 9.30 in the morning (if you are getting on earlier than this).

Then buy a ticket from Sheffield to (nearest stop after 9.30), and one from (nearest stop after 9.30) to Plymouth - on the same train.

The rationale behind this is that if you get on a train before 9.30 you are travelling peak time. After 9.30, it isn't peak. So there is no point in paying for the whole journey at peak rates.

Thats called split ticketing and only works if the train actually stops at the stations you have bought the tickets for.

For example, if you're going Sheffield to St Pancras and buy tickets for Sheffield to East Midlands Parkway then East Midlands Parkway to St Pancras, the train actually needs to stop at East Midlands Parkway for the ticket to be valid.

  4. +1 for Tenerife.

We have been there for the last 4 years, stayed at Sunset Habour, Pueblo Torviscas, it's at the quiet end of Playa de las Americas.

Plenty places to eat, most do a set menu from about €6.95 per person.

Flown from Gatwick as we have gone with friends from Kent and met them there. Used easyjet and Monarch, don't bother buying airport transfers, a taxi will cost about €25 and there's loads of them.

As said, avoid the electrical stuff, they can be quite persistent but just say no and keep walking.

We have been in August and September, gets very hot, but it's nice to cool off in the pool.

  5. But there are virtually no notaries in Sheffield. It's never a requirement of English law, you see.

So I guess that those quotations were for something else.

There's at least two, I've just had quotes from them. They way I understand it is that if you need a document to be used in another country, then it needs to be notarised, not just signed by a solicitor but signed by a proper notary.

I've had a child travel consent form notarised for travel to the USA.

  6. It could be anything, there's loads of sensors on modern cars that could cause it not to start, mine wouldn't start one day last year, the AA man couldn't find out why, all he could say was there's a sensor not working but couldn't say which one. Turned out to be the crank sensor, I found that out myself by reading forums, mines a Nissan.

If its cranking but not starting then its an ignition, fuelling or timing problem, first thing I'd do is take out the spark plugs and check for a spark. If there's a spark, you then need to check fuel is getting to the engine, if fuel supply is ok then it's possibly a timing issue, or as said the immobiliser has failed.

  7. do you want to knck on peoples doors asking them to come out in the cold and grit the road im not going to say what the answer would be.

When the roads are blocked as bad as last year people will come out and muck in, theres no other option, people need to get to work.
