Sheffield United have been granted planning permission to build 39 apartments at the corner of their Bramall Lane stadium, despite protests. The Blades’ proposals attracted eight letters of objection, mainly on the grounds of lack of parking – with only 22 spaces proposed – and from people unhappy that the four-storey buildings would ‘block daylight’ from their terrace homes. Members of Sheffield Council’s planning board were also unhappy that no ‘affordable homes’ were included as part of the scheme. But planning permission was granted after councillors said they felt the plans would bring a major improvement to a ‘tatty’ piece of land. Some £28,000 will also be given by United to improve public open space. Coun Trevor Bagshaw, planning board member and Liberal Democrat councillor for West Ecclesfield, said: “I find it very disappointing there is not a single affordable house included in the plans.” Coun Peter Rippon, Labour councillor for Shiregreen and Brightside, added: “Time and again these major applications come in and there is no contribution to affordable housing after developers cry crocodile tears about the cost. “I’m disappointed, and things should change.” However Coun Peter Price, another Shiregreen and Brightside Labour councillor, said: “It’s a tatty corner and I think the proposals will lift the whole area. “Granting the scheme will improve the ambience.” Other councillors said they understood residents’ concerns about parking but felt it was not a strong enough reason to refuse the plans. Coun Ibrar Hussain, Labour councillor for Burngreave, said: “Parking is a major issue around there, and also I think the situation about affordable housing is regrettable.” Planning board members said they felt the £28,793 contribution from Sheffield United towards public open space improvements was a ‘welcome’ aspect of the development
