Well it was the Muppets Album but I was about 5yrs old but for pop records it was:

Toni Basil - Hey Mickey..

And I made my mother put my hair in bunches with red ribbon - just like hers and me and my friend made cheerleader pom-poms. And we knew the dance. And I still know the lyrics. Tragic.

I hear you knockin' by Dave Edmunds and War by Edwinn Star. That was the first and last Tamla Motown record I ever bought. I then got Monkey Spanner by Dave and Ansell Collins - Brilliant record but I didnt know what 'ska/dub' was untill many years later.

Must have been 1971. Was also a big Slade and Suzi Quattro fan.

The first single was Billy don't be a Hero by Paper Lace from Nottingham which isn't very cool at all.

I was wondering why they're always referred to as Paper Lace from Nottingham and it turns out from my minimal research that the only acts Nottingham has ever produced are Paper Lace & Alvin Stardust, which is odd.

My first vinyl 45s were bought in 1977 although I'm not sure which I bought first.

It's a toss-up between these two classic tracks:

1 - I Remember Elvis Presley by Danny Mirror;

2 - Angelo by Brotherhood of Man.

Which must make it around August as obivously, the Danny Mirror track was a sickly tribute to Mr Presley who had just departed from this world.

As for first LP, a tricky one and probably a Christmas present. Dig this: In 1978 my parents bought a Yamaha organ and for Christmas 1978 (or possibly 1979) my grandparents spoilt me rotten by giving me Sentimental Journey by Reginald Dixon, he of Blackpool Tower Ballroom Organist fame.

No wonder I became a Smiths fan....

I'm sure mine was 'Nights in white satin' moody blues from around 1972 it was played all the time, but i bought loads from that year onwards.
i used to buy the ex-jukebox records with the pop out centres, they were really cheap.
my first album was Slade in flame (around 74) and Dark side of the moon, Pink floyd, which i bought from a little record shop in Kiveton.

Annie I'm not your daddy by Kid Creole and the coconuts on picture disc with my own pocket money from Circles records in Rotherham.
But I had been bought records - usually albums - beforehand and our local supermarket used to do a mean range of ex jukebox 45s which used to get flicked through on a regular basis. I remember buying Banana Republic by Boomtown Rats and playing it over and over again trying to learn the words.
Once i bought the first one that was it. Think i bought a single every week until i was about 14 and i caught on that I'd be better off saving up for the album.

I used to buy pop ex singles when I was very small from our local shop Dels. Random choices - I'd often buy a single by a group I'd heard of or just because I liked the name. :D I remember buying 'Will a little more love?' by Olivia Newton John and 'Banana Republic' by Boomtown Rats.

My first proper record shop experience with my own pocket money was to buy 'Annie I'm not your Daddy Kid Creole and the Coconuts' in 1982 -Picture disc and everything from Circles in Rotherham - as I was already 'djing' at my local youth club on a Thursday night with a very limited but obscure collection, I vowed to buy a single a week and did until 1986 when I got wise that albums were generally better value. :)

Albums were for Christmases and birthdays - first one I remember asking for - except Sally and Jake, the Wombles and the terrible Top of the Pops records -was Parallel lines by Blondie(Cool kid for seven!). Played it to death and I still love it. I think I bought one with my own money called Raiders of the Pop Charts~(an early Now album!) around 81/82 as it had Fat Larry's band Zoom on it.:D

Once I started I couldn't stop and I still spend faaaarrrr too much money on music.

First single bought - well, aside from non-chart stuff like those Disney songs 7" things you could collect - will probably be Antmusic (1980).

First album I bought with my own pocket money was Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Welcome To The Pleasure Dome.

Before then albums bought for me as Brithday/Christmas presents included Showaddywaddy, Grease and Kings of the Wild Frontier.
