BAZZO
Did anybody else read the Report from Sheffield's Tourist Chief last week. He told the Council that the Embassy (cough cough) World Snooker Championships at the Crucible had generated £2.3m for the city. Not £2m or £3m mark you but £2.3m. And not one councillor stood up and said [edit]. How can you possibly calculate the amount of extra cash a city gains from such an event? Does it include money spent on booze, birds and burgers by the patrons? If so where are the receipts.Does it include taxis, hotels and cigarettes. If so how much? No - as we all know these figures are just loopy estimates -the sort of guesswork that created the Pop Music Centre. And it's time our credulous councillors and lazy hacks started questioning this [edit] beforev any future public money is squandered on half-baked ventures. edited

Geoff
As much as I like a good rant about the council, please try to keep it clean. Cheers.
BAZZO
Fair point! Think the Unpopular Centre for Music has been acquired by Hallam University -along with many other areas of the city. Think of it as a business and it all makes sense.
RPG
A fair idea of how much is spent is calculated by using the science of statistics. I'd say what they did was get the average money spent in an average Sheffield week, and found out the range above the average figure. hence why this figure has just emerged and not when the tournament was on, it takes time to collate a whole city's spending for a week
Miss_60
.........I think its a brilliant thing for Sheffield to host such a prestigious event..........it generates a lot of money and puts Sheffield on the map.......I heard that it might go to London after next year? how tragic is that? ..as London hosts so many events and South Yorkshire would lose out big time. Yes it is well known now that Hallam has bought the NCPM. What other areas of the city has SHU purchased? It will be used as the new Students Union, they have pledged to allow more access to the building to the public (as it was orginally funded as a public building). To be honest it has sat empty for nearly a year, why not put it to use.
chrisb
It's an amazing building, even if it was a daft idea - but wasn't it paid for by the lottery ie mugs - if so it didn't cost me owt!
BAZZO
What else has Hallam bought? Most of Broomhall for a kick off including the YMCA building. And a mighty chunk of Howard St,Pond St,Arundel Gate -not bad for a Third Division university.
BAZZO
City Expenditure! Thanks to RPG for pointing out that Statistics are used to calculate this kind of thing. Sorry to press the point but the data are not available to indicate the average weekly expenditure of people in Sheffield. Do you seriously think that Mark & Spencers and Rackhams reveal weekly trading figures. And would saunas be forthcoming in quoting their take from the extra snooker patronage ..not to mention taxi operators, burger bars and pubs. The whole presentation of figures is plucked from the air and among more critical folk would be described as codswallop.
