Travel agent working from home

Recommended Posts

Does anyone on here work from home as a travel agent or know of anyone that does?

I'm thinking of setting up as an agent with holiday direct and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

Sorry for butting in on your thread but how do you find out about such opportunities? I worked for Apollo Travel Direct briefly a few years back (no experience previously) but keft as the hours werent as expected and I found I was either working or tavelling all the time. But I loved the job and would love to do it again.

i know someone that does it.she seems to do pretty well.It depends how much you are willing to put into it.She has months were she earns loads then others not so good,so she just makes sure she puts some money on one side when she has a good month.

I work from home and work in the Travel Industry though i don't do resvervations i work for a hotel marketing company.

I have previously worked from home doing reservations and its quite a lonely job but you have to weigh up your options and think about those who commute hours on end to get to and from work.

I now have the benefit of i get to go down to our head office in London so i still get the office experience that i sometimes miss plus i spend time on the road having meetings etc so its a little different to a reservations position.

I'd carefully consider it and if you're going to do it make sure you have a dedicated work space in your house that you can close yourself off from at the end of the day. I know about people who have worked for companies such as Travel Counsellors and they have earnt excellent money (£80k plus a year), but these people are few and fair between and they dedicated there lives to the cause.

thanks for the info. You mention people earning £80K plus, we are not looking for this kind of income. realistically would like to earn £15-20k. do you think this is possible without working all the hours god sends?

Check out this link. They are a Sheffield based travel company and are advertising for home based travel consultants.

No i don't work in the industry at the moment but the company we are looking at offers a training course to newcomers.

The initial set up is £2750 plus £100 per month, does this seem reasonable in your opinion?

Yes that seems quite a high set up charge.

A lot of companies will charge a % of your nett profit on a booking.

£2750 is a huge set up cost and a huge risk to you if you haven't worked in Travel before. It will take a few months to gain product knowledge and for you to get a client base. If i was you i'd work in Sheffield for a company like Apollo Travel (Rotherham), Journeys Direct (Eccy Rd) or Alpharooms (Eccy Rd) and gain experience before you go straight into the job.

Saying that people who are new to Travel are usually the best sellers as you are more refresh and less cynical of places, hotels etc.

Though as above if you want to work from Home Voyager are a good company and they're based in Stocksbridge.
