River Don Weir Middlewood forge "Dambusters ?"

Have we been developing a new bouncing bomb and testing it on this weir?

 

There's a large hole in the middle and all the waters running away.

 

I have tried searching on t'web but can't find any info except some defra thing about improving the river for fish by installing fish passes.

 

If that's the case as much as i like the idea of salmon swimming up the Don it all seems a bit of a vandalism type measure for an historical landmark. Surely other options available.
