Plants wanted for shady area

Recommended Posts

I'm not local to you but I throw loads of bergenias away each spring....they grow like crazy here!

I'm not splitting my hostas at the moment but I prefer to split early autumn rather than spring. I know most people prefer to split them in spring.

If you don't get any plants let me know. I sometimes shop at Meadowhall and I have customers near Attercliffe so would occasionally be in that area during working hours.

I would really love some please, they are the only thing that I have that actually flowers in my shady clay bit of garden, a few more would be fantastic to add a bit of colour and fill the spot.

I dont mind waiting until you're in the area, and can meet at Meadowhall or Attercliffe if you give me a bit of notice :)

You need to remind me very early next year. As I said, they grow like crazy here so I have just ripped most of them out. I allow them to grow during the year and flower in spring. After they have flowered, I rip them out otherwise they take over. Mine have pale pink flowers and plain green leaves.

Sounds like I have the same type but mine although fairly healthy looking dont seem to spread much, mine also flower from about March to Oct so they are lovely to see in an otherwise dead area, I will try to remember to remind you next year, thank you :)

Anyone else with anything? dont mind paying for some suitable plants.

What about anything else I dig out? I have some periwinkle that spreads like crazy. You might not want it as it spreads but its variagated so will brighten up a dark spot. I can spare some of that.

I am also going to dig up some perrenial geranium (lilac purple flowers) that has spread too far.

I don't want anything for them as they would otherwise go on the compost heap or green bin so nothing lost if they don't take.

Dry or damp shade? I'm guessing damp if you're considering Hostas.

I've got some Epimedium, lost lables but one is probably Epimedium x versicolor 'sulphureum' and the other is probably this - http://www.greatplantpicks.org/plantlists/view/567 . One is doing well in damp shade and the other in dryish shade, both in clay soils.

I also have Lilly of the Valley....far too much of it. I'm not a fan of it myself as it leaves bare ground for too much of the year.

Also Gallium odoratum, Sweet Woodruff. This is a tremendous thug, but I love it anyhow as it's so pretty and even looks nice during the winter. It'll also grow in the most challenging conditions.

Also seedlings of Corydalis lutea. Again very fast spreading (by seed) but also very charming all year round and copes with the worst conditions. It's easy to pull unwanted plants out.

Also I have a fairly deep / hot pink bergenia and two young Helleborus argutifolius going spare.

I also have a yellow arum lilly like this one - http://mygardenorg.s3.amazonaws.com/plants/4872.jpg - which was supposed to be a houseplant. I didn't want it any more so I planted it outside a few years ago, and it's grown to cover about 1 square meter. It hardly flowers - it probably wants damp sun rather than damp shade - but it does make a lovely exotic foliage plant, easily as good as hostas and a lot more slug resistant.

Any of those sound interesting? I'm not terribly local to S5 but do want to head up that way sometime. I'd want a bit of money towards delivery / my time but not huge amounts.

:D Yes the soil is damp clay and in the shade but one area that is empty is shady dry.

I would really love some bergenia as I know that will grow in the garden, also some Corydalis lutea, Epimedium x versicolor 'sulphureum', and Lily of the valley please that would be wonderful, I would love the lily but usually they are poisonous to cats and I have some plus visiting cats so best not :( of course I am happy to cover petrol.
