Car not starting

Recommended Posts

Despite people having disconnected the battery 'millions' of times with the engine running - I wouldn't do it. Plenty of websites like this one advising you why.

To the OP - your shout whether you take someone's advice to disconnect the battery with the engine running - just Google it first though.

I have raced cars for years and done things you wouldn't dream of doing in a car :)

This is a nothing job that any compitant person could diagnose in seconds of seeing the vehicle but there are too many people who think they know about vehicles when they know nothing in real terms.

If anyone would like to question my knowledge please go ahead because I have been pulling engines out of cars and rebuilding them since I was 15 years old and have seen it and done it ! :)

Where do I start with this one, first of all you can not bump start a diesel engine.if when you try to start it and you get a clicking sound it will be a flat battery a loose battery connection or the solenoide in the starter motor faulty, try first of all to start it with jump leads from a good battery or another diesel car, if that does not work buy a new battery and try to start it, if that does not work it will be the starter motor buy and fit a new or recon one, once it starts you need to check the alternator is charging the only way to check if it is charging is to use a multimeter you should be getting at least 14 volts at the battery when the engine is running,if there is not 14 volts there the alternator is faulty.

I have a 2001 mazda 323. 2.0 turbo diesel. I turn the key to start it but all i get is a clicking noise. Doesnt even try cranking. I have taken the starter off the car and connected it to jump leads there is nothing what so ever. If i sit turning the key for ages it will eventually start. Any1 got any idea what it could be.

has this just started happening during the extreme cold weather

if so I would put my money on the battery.

if its not the battery its the solenoid, the contacts will have burnt out

but I doubt you will be able to buy a solenoid on its own so

you will need a new starter motor.

the best thing to try is a jump start from another car but let the other car

run for five or ten minuets before trying to start yours

Well put like this,a lot of diesel engines use heater plugs to start, if you have a flat battery you could shove it all round the neighborhood for half an hour and it would not start as the heater plugs need a good fully charged battery to work properly the heart of a good diesel engine is a good battery and charging system ,there is a lot of compression in a diesel engine and it will need a real good shove to get it going, its not impossible to bump start a diesel engine but it is hard work and you need a big hill or a couple of mates to help you,its always best to have a good battery to start them.

I have bumped many diesels with no problems but know you can possibly damage the pump

Yes very true

take your battery off stick it on charge till the morning and try again

Yes good idea if you have a charger that is.

That's OK but it needs be another diesel car that you jump it from or a large amperage car of at least 70 amps as a diesel needs a lot of amperage to crank over especially in cold weather.
