taxman   12 #1 Posted December 3, 2012 (edited) New laws came in today which mean that cash payments at recycling yards are no longer legal.  Not before time either. Hopefully this will help to stem the tide of metal thefts up and down the country. There are loopholes however and itinerant traders, your rag and bone men types, can still pay for stuff with cash. geared   321 #4 Posted December 3, 2012 It's a step in the right direction and it'll help better distinguish the decent folk and companies from the thieves.  The authorities can then concentrate their efforts on the minority of yards that still take in stolen items and give cash payments. ronthenekred   10 #7 Posted December 3, 2012 It is good in theory but I would suggest that it will be impossible to police.   Not really. The majority of scrap yards comply with the law. Those that do will point fingers at those that don't. It's actually in their interest to do so.
 Share this content via...
geared   321 #8 Posted December 3, 2012 It is good in theory but I would suggest that it will be impossible to police.  It narrows down the number of yards that need watching, so when police decide to conduct an action day they have a small number of places to go to, and an increased chance of catching criminals. Thistledoo   10 #11 Posted December 3, 2012 Do you mean all the yards you use? Or all the yards everyone uses?  How do you think that the authorities are going to stop cash in hand payments? Police numbers are being drastically cut under the present regime, so how exactly will it be policed?
 Share this content via...
poppins   10 #12 Posted December 3, 2012 The scrap yards we've used needs to see an ID, also have you on CCTV , so we don't hear of many metal thefts
 Share this content via...
